Welcome to the Department of Geography
The Department of Geography and Environmental Science (DGES) was founded in 1967 and started its teaching programmes in March 1968 with three academic staff, a chief Technician, a secretary and 48 undergraduate students. Today, the Department has an establishment of 14 academic posts, 6 technical posts and several other support staff. Initially, the Department was housed in the Geology Building. In 1971, it moved to its own building (current location), where extensions have since been provided. By 1974, the Regional and Urban Planning Centre was established as a unit within the Department to teach a MSc Degree in Regional and Urban Planning and to conduct planning research. This Centre had its own Director who, however, was answerable to the head of the Department of Geography. In 1984, the Centre was granted Departmental status and became the Department of Rural and Urban Planning, administered under the Faculty of Social Studies.
The DGES provides services (research, teaching, community service and consultancy). The main goal is to enhance client efficiency and competitiveness by delivering accurate, complete, timely and relevant results. It is in this vein that the Department offers training in the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), Remote Sensing (RS) and database management systems (DBMS) hereby named geo-information science.
