Mission Statement
To be one of the most acclaimed departments dealing with economic issues in the country, the region, the continent and globally in historical perspective, and to churn out high quality graduates and post-graduates who can contribute positively to the ever-changing trajectory of the national and global economy.. It seeks to do this through the provision of high quality teaching and supervision at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and by offering a wide range of courses covering diverse regions and cultures.

Chairman’s statement
Welcome to the Department of Economic History. The Department has grown from being a small unit in the Department of History into a full-fledged, autonomous department in 1989.The remarkable journey has been made possible by the wisdom and tireless efforts of members of staff who have worked hard to build the Department into a recognized brand within the University.Economic history is neither history, economics, nor a hybrid of the two. Although it shares certain characteristics with both disciplines, it is a stand-alone discipline which every aspect of economic life in the past: all activities concerning production, exchange and consumption. It is concerned with analyzing economic processes and theories as they evolved over time in different regions of the world. In short, economic historians are concerned with the way people in the past made their living, the society that enabled them to do so, and how these factors changed over time. In this way, we hope to produce well-informed graduates who are capable of influencing the process of policy-making at various levels for national and international development.

Our products have been successful in a broad range of careers in the academic as well as in other professions. In 2016, the Department lobbied with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education to have Economic History offered as a subject from Forms 1 to 6. Apart from teaching in high schools, the career paths have substantially diversified to include, among others, research institutes, banking, and economic policy formulators, NGOs and government institutes. For those who proceed to do our Masters degree, they have had no problems in being accepted into doctoral and postdoctoral programmes in top universities in the region and abroad in the UK, the USA and elsewhere. Some of these products come back to man the Department as Lecturers.
