Executive Dean's Statement
I would like to welcome you to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Zimbabwe. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities was born in August 2020 to respond to the demands of the heritage based Education 5.0 promulgated by the government of Zimbabwe in 2018. The philosophy underpinning the operations of the Faculty is Kuziva/Ukwazi (Deep understanding and consciousness) and Kugona/lokwenelisa (Being strategic and competent in execution and kuita (action) (UZ Strategic Plan, 2019-2025: iv). The import of this is that the faculty is aware of the problems which the people of Zimbabwe are facing and is desirous to provide solutions to these problems through praxis. The Faculty is, thus, results-driven. It is a break from the past when the faculty, then known as the Faculty of Arts, would produce graduates that could not solve problems affecting society but would churn out graduates who would seek employment instead of create it. As part of the reconfiguration process, the faculty has reduced its Departments from the traditional 8 under the old Faculty of Arts, to 5 under the new Faculty. These 5 are:
- Department of Philosophy Religion and Ethics
- Department of Creative Media and Communication
- Department of Languages Literature and Culture
- Department of History Heritage and Knowledge Systems
- Department of Peace Security and Society
The Faculty also has one institute, namely; the Confucius Institute and is in the process of establishing the Multicultural and Language Centre. The Faculty houses the University of Zimbabwe Campus Radio Station which shall start airing soon. The Faculty boasts of over 14 academics in the Associate and Full Professor Grades and quite a number of Visiting Professors and Senior Lecturers from many parts of Europe.
