BSc Honours Degree in Economics (HEC)


Entry requirements: 3 'A' level subjects preferably Commercials, plus 'O' level Mathematics with a B or better.

 

First Year Core Courses in Economics (2hrs of lecture/week plus 1hr of tutorial a week per course)

ECON 101 Introduction to Economic Principles (double course, 24 units): The course is in 2 parts Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, it deals with features of the Zimbabwean economy.

ECON 102 Introduction to Economic Statistics Principles (double course, 24 units). This course’s focus is on statistical ideas and techniques.

ECON 103 Mathematics for Economists 1 Principles (double course, 24 units).       The aim of the course is to equip students with mathematical analytical tools.

Second Year Core Courses First Semester in Economics

ECON 201 Applied Statistics with prerequisites of ECON 101 / ECON 102: The course equips students with both statistical variance analysis and Mathematics.

ECON 205 Mathematics for Economists 2 with prerequisites             of ECON 101/ ECON 103: This course aims to develop mathematical skills important to modern economics with emphasis on linear algebra matrices, determinants and matrix inversion and dynamic linear programming.

ECON 206 Microeconomics 1 with prerequisites of ECON 101/ ECON 103: The course comprises of 3 parts; theory of consumer behaviour, production theory and theory of market structures.

ECON 202 Econometrics 1 with prequisites of ECON 101 / ECON 102: This course aims at equipping students with fundamental concepts of conducting empirical studies.

ECON 203 International Trade Theory and Policy with prerequisite of ECON 101: The course focuses on international trade and the gains from trade.

ECON 204 Macroeconomics with its prerequisites ECON 101 / ECON 103: The course introduces students to the building blocks of macroeconomics, consumption, savings, investment, money supply and money demand.

Third Year Core Courses at 1st Semester in Economics

ECON 301 Development Economics with prerequisite of ECON 206: The course seeks to equip students with the background to Microeconomics 1 and Macroeconomics 2 to familiarize with concepts of Microeconomics models of development.

ECON 303 Microeconomics 2 with prerequisites of ECON 205/ECON 206: The course equips students with the background of Microeconomics and Mathematics to enable them understand concepts of Production Theory, General Equilibrium and Welfare Economics.
