The Institute of Continuing Health Education is a department in the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences. The Institute is an evolutional development of the Postgraduate Committee of the sixties. The latter had been given the task to co-ordinate and organise the postgraduate training of the few serving doctors in this country at that time. All these doctors were sent out of the country, at great cost, for their specialist training. As the output of the medical school increased and the requirement for postgraduate training also increased, it became desirable for postgraduate training to become localised. The Institute was established in the late seventies with this in mind.
With time, it has also been realised that the responsibility of the UZCHS (formerly: School of Medicine) extends beyond just certificated postgraduate training of doctors. We see our function as providing a facility for all forms of continuing medical education not only for doctors but for all categories of health professionals: certificated education, personal professional development as well as skills renewal. We cater for all health professionals within the limits of our staffing levels and patterns.
