Dr Makurira has over 20 years experience working in the water sector having worked for the Ministry of Water and Resources and Development and ZINWA prior to joining the Civil Engineering Department in 2003. He specialises in integrated water management, hydrology, water allocation, water governance and climate change. He teaches water engineering courses at BSc and postgraduate level. In the process, he has supervised more than 30 BSc projects and at least 20 Masters Dissertations in the water engineering field. Dr Makurira is a Corporate Member of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers and participates in several community projects including acting as advisor to the Ministry of Water Resources Development and Management. He participates in various capacity building programmes including lecturing and examining at various universities in the region. Dr Makurira holds a PhD in Water Management from UNESCO-IHE/TU Delft and he is involved in several research initiatives locally and on international river basins. He has published several articles in international journals and has presented scientific research at various conferences and workshops. She has previously worked in Sofia City Council, was elected councillor in Sofia. She has worked on large residential and mixed development communities and roads in Sofia and other places in Bulgaria, including planning, design and construction. As an academic member in the UACG and its established consultancy, she has many approved and realized design and construction projects, including residential areas, housing estates, several university camps and buildings. In teams, she has won a number of national and international competitions on university campus designs. As university lecturer and professor she has taught many subjects in planning and civil engineering. In Zimbabwe she has a significant experience in students’ training to Bachelor of Technology and Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons). Currently she teaches transportation and traffic engineering and civil engineering construction. Courses lectured by Prof. Vassileva are also Engineering Drawing & Design, Urban planning & Building design (in the Department of Urban & Rural Planning, UZ), Engineering Economy etc. As a consultant she has designed houses in Harare. Prof. Vassileva has work individually and in teams on various research issues, ranging from development of settlement systems, highways, various traffic and transportation problems and has published many reviewed papers and research reports in different journals. He has previously worked for a municipal council in Zimbabwe for nearly 10 years before joining the University of Zimbabwe in January 1999. At Redcliff Municipality, he has worked on roads, housing construction, water and sewerage infrastructure projects, ranging from planning, design, construction, and maintenance and operation. At the University of Zimbabwe he worked on his PhD studies and was involved in water quality and wastewater management projects in the cities of Harare, Kwekwe, Gweru, and Masvingo towns. He was also involved in the running of two masters programmes in water at the University of Zimbabwe and was attached to the WaterNet Project (regional capacity building project in Southern Africa) at various times in 2004 to 2005. In 2005 he briefly worked for the National Community Water and Sanitation Training Institute (NCWSTI) in South Africa as a Senior Manager, Higher Education and Training. At NCWSTI, he was involved in the formulation of post-graduate courses and the running of a BSc programme in Community Water Supply and Sanitation, plus other research and training programmes of the Institute. From October 2005 to October 2008, Innocent was with the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, in Delft, The Netherlands, as a Project Manager on the NPT-funded capacity building project on Water Resources and Environmental Management (WREM) at the National University of Rwanda.
Whilst in Rwanda, Innocent also trained and assisted in the development of environmental impact assessment systems. He was involved in the revalidation process for the teaching programmes in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the National University Of Rwanda. He has supervised more than 25 MSc students and involved in the start up of 6 PhD students in Rwanda. Innocent has written many journal articles and has also reviewed several papers and research reports and is an editor/co-editor of a regular special issue of the Elsevier Physics and Chemistry of the Earth journal and an editorial board member of the Reviews in Environmental Science and Bio/Technology journal. After leaving Rwanda he was involved in the internal evaluation of the Nile Basin Capacity Building Network conducted by Cap-Net.
In March 2009, Innocent was invited to assist WaterNet as an interim manager. He occupied this post until the end of August 2009 after which he moved to the University of Zimbabwe, Department of Civil Engineering, where he was appointed as the SADC-WaterNet Professorial Chair in Integrated Water Resources Management.

In addition to having earned a doctorate in engineering, he has acquired more than forty years of combined teaching, research, and consulting experience in a variety of disciplines of structural engineering in North America and abroad. He holds registration as a professional engineer in Canada and is an accomplished technical writer as well. As a senior lecturer, Dr. Salahuddin has taught most of the core courses in civil (structural) engineering curriculum in universities in Canada, the Middle East (Bahrain), and Africa (Zimbabwe). While teaching in Canada (1971 – 83), he presented the following series of short courses for Canadian Professional Engineers: Buckling of Stiffened Frames; Stress Analysis using Photoelasticity; Construction of Hydroelectric Projects; Dynamics of Structures; Finite Element Method, and Analysis of Underground Pipelines. He also taught a course on the Design of Steel Structures at the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe. As a professional engineer (P. Eng.), Dr. Salahuddin has carried out several challenging tasks in the civil engineering industry. These include the planning of industrial estates; excavation and concreting plans and pre-stressing scheme of hydroelectric power plants; the design of heavy reinforced concrete and steel structures; construction planning using the critical path method; dynamic analysis of nuclear reactor building components; design of space frames and silos, highway bridges, water treatment plants, and framed structures; analysis of underground nuclear power plant piping systems; time history and response spectra analysis of power plants; soil-structure interaction problems; and design of pipe supports. Based on his research-work, Dr. Salahuddin has authored more than 70 publications which have been presented at international conferences and published in technical journals. The project involves Generation of a GIS-based erosion inventory map of hydrological catchments of Zimbabwe based on recognized empirical models (USLE & SLEMSA). Mr Gumindoga was also responsible for hydrological and hydraulic modelling on an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) project on Construction of a shopping mall in the University of Zimbabwe campus. Between December 2007 and July 2008 Mr Gumindoga was the student hydrologist for the ZAMBEZI ACTION PLAN Phase II (ZACPRO 6.2) responsible for producing the spatial variation of flood hazard and a flood early warning system for the Zambezi basin.
