The Sports section of the University of Zimbabwe falls under the Department of Student Affairs.The offices are located within the National Breweries Pavilion amidst the numerous sporting facilities on the southern section of campus. All activities in this section are co-ordinated by the Sports Director.
The following sports activities are pursued at the University: football, basketball, volleyball,athletics, netball, table tennis, tennis, karate (shukokai, shorinryu and dragon), rugby, badminton,chess, softball, weight training, hockey and squash. Swimming and road running/jogging are purely recreational sports at present, whereas provision is also made for students who would like to pursue judo, cricket and tenniquoits (deck tennis) at a competitive level.
Indoor faciltities are provided for squash, weight training, karate, table tennis, judo and badminton in the Students’ Union sports complex.
The following outdoor facilities are available: one floodlit athletics track, four football pitches (one of which is floodlit), one cricket pitch, two hockey fields (one of which is floodlit), two all weather basketball/volleyball courts (one of which is floodlit), one gravel volleyball court, one hockey pitch, two netball courts, one rugby pitch, six tennis courts, three of which are all weather surfaces, one tennis practice wall and one 25 m swimming pool.
Most of the major sports receive professional coaching expertise ensuring a high level of com-petitive sport. The level of recreational sport is quite high on campus and closed tournaments are organised annually by each of the sporting groups. University teams participate in national sports leagues in a number of different sporting activities
