About the Department
The UZ College of Health Sciences formerly known as the UZ Medical School introduced the dentistry programme in 1996, with the initiative being co-ordinated by Professor M M Chidzonga under the Department of Surgery. Seven students enrolled for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Degree Programme in March 1997.
The Department of Dentistry was established in June 1999 under the chairmanship of Professor M M Chidzonga with a core staff of three full time lecturers and six part time clinical teachers. There has been a steady growth of students and staff. The Department’s Academic staff constitutes 7 Permanent Full Time Lecturers, 2 Teaching Assistants and 8 Part Time Lecturers. Masters in Dentistry –Orthodontics (MDent Orthodontics) was introduced in 2011. The UZ Oral Health Centre facilitates clinical teaching of both undergraduate and post graduate students.
