General Overview of the Department

Mission:  To be a centre of excellence in Economics teaching and research in Zimbabwe and Africa, and to establish our reputation as such both nationally and internationally.

 Background

The Department of Economics is the oldest Department at the University of Zimbabwe.  Although the University was officially incorporated by Royal Charter in 1955, part-time classes for accountancy students had started in 1952.  Responsibility for these classes was given to the Economics Department when it was officially established.  The Department currently offers the Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours Degree in Economics at the undergraduate level.  In addition it teaches students from other Departments in the Faculties of Social Studies, Commerce and Arts.  At the post-graduate level it offers the Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Economics by coursework and dissertation, while the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) Degrees are attained by theses.  Currently the MSc is available both on full-time and part-time basis. 

The Department is also offering an Executive Certificate in Economics in 6 specialist areas that is, Budget and Monetary Policy Analysis, International Trade and Finance, Macroeconomic Management, Financial Econometrics, Macroeconomic Management and Economic Modelling and Forecasting.  The duration of study for each certificate is 3 months.  Classes will be offered during weekends from 0800hours to 1600hours.  Each certificate has 8 modules.  The courses are designed for individuals who want to enrich themselves with economic knowledge.
