It is the profession that designs and manufactures the so called white goods and entertainment equipment, the profession that is so essential in medicine, agriculture and any movie that you can think of. Imagine a world without computers, the modern car, X-ray machines, without light, without aeroplanes. A modern cellular phone is the embodiment of electrical engineering. Inside that tiny package are batteries, electric motors, transformers, microprocessors, software, a TV screen! From humble beginnings in 1974, this young Department of Electrical Engineering is the largest trainer of Electrical Engineers in Zimbabwe and boasts among its alumni Chief Executives of major private and public organisations in Zimbabwe. Many of its graduates occupy key positions in technical and commercial organisations around the world. The aim of the Department is to produce well-rounded electrical engineers with specialisation towards the end of their academic programme. The Department’s programmes are sensitised to the needs of industry and the current thrust is in the fields of Computer Engineering, Networking, Industrial Electronics and Process Automation. There is also a thrust in Power and Energy Systems with specific attention to sustainable energy resources and modelling.
