Mission Statement
The Department of Immunology is a University of Zimbabwe Department in the Faculty of Medicine. The Department is located on the ground floor of Parirenyatwa Central Hospital. Its objectives are: to teach immunology to undergraduate and postgraduate student; to provide an immunology service to all hospitals; to serve as a specialist referral centre for all laboratories, not only in the country but also in the region at large. Examples of immunological techniques for which referrals are often sought are cellular immunology and molecular immunology. The Department is engaged in research in molecular and cellular immunology under the theme: "The Immuno-compromised Host"

 

Role in the Faculty
The Department teaches immunology to 3rd, 4th and 5th year students on the MBChB and BDS programmes. It also teaches Immunology to Diploma students doing Medical Laboratory Sciences, Honours degree students doing the HBMLSc course. The Department teaches postgraduate students across the Medical Faculty Departments; MMed in Paediatrics, Medicine and Surgery; MSc in Clinical Chemistry and Medical Microbiology.

 

Services offered:
The Department offers a range of Immuno-diagnostic tests for a variety of infections, as well as allergic and autoimmune diseases. Most significantly, the Department is the only laboratory in the country that offers:
cryptococcal antigen testing critical in the diagnosis and management of cryptococcal meningitis among HIV-positive patients,
Molecular biology tools (i.e. DNA PCR) for HIV diagnosis in infants under the age of 18 months and
determination of HIV viral load quantitation for monitoring antiretroviral therapy and for research purposes
