Brief History The Department was established on 1 October 1968 at the Main Campus of the then University College of Southern Rhodesia. It had four sections namely virology, parasitology, bacteriology and mycology. This was under the Chairmanship of Professor J. G. Cruickshank with Mr Frank L. Golding as the Chief Technologist.
Role in The College The Department of Medical Microbiology is located in The College of Health Sciences Old Building's first floor within Parirenyatwa Hospital. The Department runs a two year MSc in Medical Microbiology, teaches third year in the MBChB and BDS curriculum, first year BSc in Health Education and Promotion, first year BSc in Rehabilitation, HBMLS third year BSc Nursing Science course and Diploma in Health and Adult Education. The Department also teaches students from the School of Nursing and Private hospitals for the Specialist Nursing Diploma (Theatre and Intensive Care) and the Post Basic Nursing Course. This is in addition to the Combined Basic Sciences Course for Post Graduate students. The Department also provides clinical diagnostic service of infectious conditions to the Students Health Service Centre, private and public institutions as well as to ongoing research projects.
