Mission
To produce highly skilled Ophthalmologists, Optometrists and Ophthalmic Nurses capable of running eye care programs in the community.
Vision
To be an internationally recognized training centre for Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Ophthalmic Nurses and Undergraduate Medical and Dental Students.
Departmental goals
To provide adequate training capacity for ophthalmic Manpower. To produce Ophthalmologists to meet national and regional needs at the rate of three locals and two foreigners per year. To develop training programs for Optometrists and Ophthalmic Nurses. To promote local and multi-centre collaborative research in Ophthalmology. To establish strong links with other Ophthalmic Departments in various Universities within and outside our borders. To empower Medical and Dental Practitioners with basic Ophthalmic skills in the delivery of primary eye care to patients. To be the National and Regional reference centre for management of complex ophthalmic conditions.
To promote and support National Vision 2020 programs through:
- Outreach cataract surgical expeditions.
- Provision of cover to Provincial Ophthalmologists on leave.
- Development of Vision 2020 Satellite Clinics.
