Diploma in Ophthalmology


Entry requirements
· Applicants must have obtained the MBChB Degree of this University or an equivalent degree of another university of an approved standard by the University of Zimbabwe

· Applicants must have completed a suitably supervised internship and be appropriately registered with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe.

· Preference is given to candidates who will have gained at least one year’s post graduate experience in a Provincial, Central or District Hospital.

 

Duration of programe:

The normal duration of the programme is one year full-time, during which time the candidate shall be engaged in full time training. Candidate must ensure that they have full sponsorship for the duration of the training programme.

 

Structure of programme

The programme consists of one part only.

Before formal examinations begin, there is a period of two weeks without academic instruction to allow for individual study/revision. It is at the candidate’s discretion whether he/she applies to his/her employer for leave from clinical duties for the same period.

The programme shall consist of studies in the following areas:
Anatomy and physiology of the eye and its central connections.
The anatomy of the orbit and its relations.
· Examination methods
· Diseases of the lids
· Diseases of conjunctiva
· Diseases of the cornea and sclera
· Diseases of the uveal tract
· Diseases of the lens
· Diseases of the vitreous and retina
· Diseases of the optic nerve
· Diseases of the proximal visual pathways
· Diseases of the orbit and lacrimal system
· Glaucomas
· Strabismus
· First aid and nursing care of the eye
· Surgical procedures in the following
· Lid repair
· Enucleation
· Evisceration
· Exenteration
· Corneal repairs
· Conjunctival biopsies
· Pre and post-operative surgical eye care
All areas of study are compulsory.
