Welcome to the Faculty of Medicine

The then Faculty of Medicine now the College of Health Sciences was established in 1963 under the auspices of the University of Birmingham, U.K. It is still the only training centre for medical doctors in Zimbabwe. The College currently offers degree prorgrammes in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Rehabilitation, Radiology and Health Education & Promotion. An Institute of Continuing Health Education has been established to cater for postgraduate training in specialist areas of medicine and continuing education needs of those in the medical field.

The College of Health Sciences is committed to the training of Health Care Delivery personnel to meet the health needs of the people of Zimbabwe. Training is geared towards primary health care with emphasis on a preventive rather curative approach.

As an institute of higher learning, the College takes academic excellence as the hallmark of its existence. To that extent, the College encourages the promotion and enhancement of science through relevant research.

The department assists the Department of Psychology in the teaching and clinical supervision of Masters in Clinical Psychology students.

The department assists the Department of Occupational Therapy the teaching of the Psychiatry and Psychology courses.

Community Service

The staff in the department of Psychiatry has a project called the Crisis Support Centre which is situated in the Parirenyatwa Hospital.  The project was originally supported by the World Health Organisation and now is supported by Parirenyatwa Hospital.  The centre is a walk-in centre which is a free service where members can come if they are in Psychological and emotional crisis.

 

The Department of Psychiatry are a part of a team that offers Continued Medical Education to Qualified Medical Practitioners.
