Welcome to the Faculty of Social Studies

The Faculty of Social Studies houses eight departments made up of six teaching departments and two research centres which offer Masters and Doctoral programs. Social Studies has on offer a wide array of programmes and research interests for the 2500 students with a staff establishment of 108 lecturers. The faculty plays an important role to national and regional manpower needs by producing sought after graduates employed in the public and private sectors, NGOs and parastatals. Graduate students have the priviledge of being supervised by contemporary researchers and undertake cutting-edge research in all social science fields.

Entry Requirements:  Mathematics and Geography at ‘O’ level and should have passed 3 ‘A’ levels which include Geography.

 

Part 1 courses for 1st Semester in Real Estate Management

REM101 Urban Planning I  (12 units): The course enables students to know the concepts of urban planning.

REM102 Urban Economics I  (12 units): The course enables students to know the concepts of urban economics.

REM103 Statistics  (12 units): The course enriches the student’s understanding of the application of statistical concepts                       

REM104 Building Technology (12 units): The course enables students to know the evolution of the building industry

 

Part 1 courses for 1st Semester in Real Estate Management

REM105 Financial Accounting I (12 units): The course gives the student basic accounting knowledge.

REM106 Building Studies (12 units): The course offers detailed understanding of the building complex.

REM107 Valuation I   (12 units): The course introduces the student to valuation theory.

REM108 Information Processing (12 units): Teaches the student to apply computer packages in statistical analysis.

 

Part 2 courses at 1st Semester in Real Estate Management

REM 201 Urban Planning II with its prerequisite REM 101 (12 units): The course looks at detailed concepts in urban development.

REM 202 Urban Economics II with its prerequisite REM 102 (12 units): The course focuses on practical examples in urban economics.

REM 203 Real Estate Development I (12 units): The course’s objective is to make student understand about the involvement of the development of real estate.

REM 204 Law I (12 units): The course teaches students to understand the Laws in building industry.

 

Part 2 Courses at 2nd Semester in Real Estate Management

REM 205 Building Services (12 units): The course teaches students to know what is involved in building services and maintenance.

REM 206 Financial Accounting II with its prerequisite REM 105 (12 units): The course teaches students the discipline of financial planning in real estate.

REM 207 Research and Quantitative Methods (12 units): The course equips students with the knowledge of some generic techniques in real estate.

REM 208 Valuation II REM 107: The course introduces valuation mathematics.

REM 209 Property and Facility Management I(12 units): The course aims to equip students about the property rights and facility management

REM 210 Real Estate Finance and Investments I(12 units): The course introduces students to the knowledge of real estate finances and investments.

 

Part 3 Courses in Real Estate Management

Involves student attachment for 2 semesters.

 

REM 380 Industrial Attachment and Professional Experience (student attachment) 120 units

The purpose of attachment is to make students familiarize with the practice of a Realtor.

 

Part 4 Courses at 1st semester in Real Estate Management

Level IV starts on satisfactory completion of level three in line with set out criteria by DRUP.

REM 401 Urban Management:  The course involves understanding urban governance system.

REM 402 Professional Practice: The course equips students with professional skills for real estate management.

REM 403 Real Estate Development II with prerequisite REM 203: The course brings in a critical analysis of the real estate field.

REM 404 Law II with prerequisite REM 204 (12 units): The course equips the student with commercial law and advanced law in real estate.

REM 405 Negotiation, Arbitration and Mediation (12 units): The course equips the student with concepts of negotiation, arbitration and mediation in real estate.

REM 470 Dissertation (24 units): It enables the student to apply what was learnt throughout on a particular research topic.

 

Part 4 courses at 2nd Semester in Real Estate Management

REM 406 Advanced Valuation (12 units): The course looks at other real estate concepts which affect valuation.

REM 407 Valuation III with prerequisite REM 208 (12 units): The students learn advanced valuation mathematics in real estate.

REM 408  Property and Facility Management II with prerequisite REM 209 (12 units): The course focuses on costing of maintenance works.

REM 409 Real Estate Finance and Investments II  with prerequisite REM 210 (12 units): The course focuses on tender procedures in building industries.

REM 470 Dissertation (24 units): It enables the student to apply what was learnt throughout on a particular research topic.
