The Department of Teacher Education is mandated by the University through the organ of the Scheme of Association to take the lead in the assurance of the requisite high quality in the standards set for teacher education programmes throughout Zimbabwe. In this process we are guided by the statutes of the Senate Sub-committee on Associate and Affiliate Status (SSAAS) as well as our Vision and statement of Mission in the assurance of quality in teacher education as laid out in the Departmental Strategic Plan.

Quality assurance, especially in sensitive fields such as teacher education is a complex process which demands that several interlinked activities carried out done simultaneously by way of setting, monitoring, and measuring the achievement or otherwise of agreed benchmarks. Such activities thus constitute the core areas in the academic and professional work carried out by the Department on a day to day basis. This work can be categorised in terms of academic teaching, research in teacher education and related issues and the provision of extension and consultancy services for the associate colleges as outlined below.

Over the years the Department with support of the University and the Faculty has built up a well-honed team of academics and researchers with diverse skills and expertise in teacher education. They have ensured that DTE remains the reference point in as far as quality in teacher is concerned in Zimbabwe. We can see this from the fact that our academic staff are very much in demand to participate as examiners, guest lecturers and advisors not just in academic institutions, but also in government and civil society as well. Because of this our student products are assured of a qualification that not only enables them to meet their aspirations in the field, but also one which enables them to do this within a practical and innovative context.
