Bachelor’s Degrees (full-time / part-time)

There are three versions of this degree on offer at any one time depending on a number of factors set by the University. These are:

  • Bachelor of Education (Teacher Education)
  • Bachelor of Education (Primary Education)
  • Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education)
  • Bachelor of Education (Art and Design; Music; Physical Education)

The B. Ed degree (full-time version) is basically of two- year duration to take full account of the fact that a candidate has completed a three year diploma at one of the Associate Colleges in the Scheme of Association.

To qualify for admission a student should have a teaching Diploma or equivalent, with some additional  requirements for some subjects like Art and Design, Music and Physical Education. ECD candidates should have a recognized pre-school or infant Diploma. All B. Ed programmes require the student to complete a total of 16 courses amounting to 240 course units.

Competition for places is very high and only the best candidates are selected. For this year over 200 candidates applied for entry into the B. Ed (Primary) degree programme. However due to capacity constraints the Department was only able to accept 35 candidates to start in August 2012.

Master’s Degrees (full-time / part-time)

These are offered to follow up on candidates who have succeeded at the B. Ed level. To be accepted, a

candidate should have attained a Lower Second Division or GPA of 2.2 or better at the undergraduate level.

Over the course of the master’s programme, the student is required to complete a total of 12 courses or 180

course units.

They follow the same pattern in which we have generic programme as well as some newer, or more specialised

ones. Note that Primary Education and Physical Education are not as yet available at this level.

  • Master of Education (Teacher Education)
  • Master of Education (Early Childhood Education)
  • Master of Education (Art and Design, Music)

These M.Ed degrees are taught programmes in which the student is expected to produce a supervised

dissertation on completion. Average duration to complete the programme is 18 months (full-time). Part- time will

normally double the time commitment.
