Research programmes in the department of Teacher Education

The Doctor of Philosophy (D. Phil) Degree (full-time / part –time)

As a research doctorate, the D.Phil. is an obvious starting point in discussing the involvement of our Department in research activities. Students apply and are accepted on the basis of the parameters set by the Academic Committee through the Faculty Higher Degrees Committee (FHDC).

In the Department of Teacher Education this degree is also optimised in close conjunction with supervisors from sister Departments in the Faculty of Education itself as well as other institutions external to UZ.

At the present moment DTE can boast of at least three doctoral students pursuing their studies in the field of teacher education.

Areas of possible study at this level include but are not restricted to the following cognate areas:

  • Curriculum Evaluation
  • Supervision
  • Ethnomusicology
  • Early Childhood Education

For applications, please see the General Regulations and also the Faculty Regulations. We hope in the near future that this list will expand to include other areas of need in teacher education. So, check out this site again later.

Our in-house journal: The Zimbabwe Journal of Teacher Education(ZJTE)

Formerly titled as the Zimbabwe Bulletin of Teacher Education (ZBTE), this is an in-house peer-reviewed journal covering issues related to the theory and practice of teacher education in its various contexts.

It is issued two times a year and is published internationally under the imprint of the University of Zimbabwe Publications. Members and students in the Faculty of Education, college lecturers in the Scheme of Association and other academics are free to submit articles for publication. Editorial control resides in an Editorial Board which falls under Professor Chivore as Editor-in-chief.

A number of back issues of this journal are still available from the Department. Please enquire through the Chief Secretary for more details.

Publication of books on teacher education

In tandem with the research journal, the Department is currently involved in the process of publishing a series of books on teacher education issues as called for by the current Strategic Plan and recommendations from a number of previous conferences.

The ultimate objective of this publication effort is assisting the mission of the Department by:

  • Documenting processes and structures in teacher education in a time of change;
  • Supporting new areas of study introduced in the curriculum;
  • Plugging gaps and problem areas identified in the Scheme of Association;
  • Elucidating issues bedevilling issues of quality in teacher education; and
  • Provision of high quality and well-researched learning and teaching materials for students and their lecturers in associate colleges.

This book publishing project has also been recently supplanted by another effort to produce distance learning materials for college students in the form of modules.

Up to five titles are envisaged, resources permitting. Please see the resources section of this site for the latest offerings from Prof. Chivore and his team.

Extension and consultancy services for associate colleges in the Scheme of Association are a major part of the Departments’ activities in the assurance of quality in teacher education. These activities are explained in our handbook for Quality Assurance in Associate Colleges. Enquire from the Chief Secretary if you need a copy.

The flagship programme in these activities is the accreditation, monitoring and quality control of the 3 -year Diploma in Education qualification for primary and secondary teaching awarded by the University of Zimbabwe. Accreditation for Associateship is determined by the Senate through the Senate Sub-committee on Associate and Affiliate Status (SSAAS). After the granting of associateship, colleges are expected to meet the stringent conditions set by SSAAS. Every three years SSAAS carries out an ‘accreditation audit’ to ensure that the conditions originally agreed are in place.

To maintain good communication and continuous dialogue within the system and ensure that standards are always met, the University has allocated each member of the Department of Teacher Education as the Programme Coordinator for a designated associate college.

Here is the list of the accredited Associate Colleges in the Scheme of Association with the name of the current programme coordinator(s):
