Community service: With the HIV/AIDS prevalence rate at 20.1 %, Zimbabwe is rated among the worst affected nations in southern Africa (UNDP, 2008). The number of children infected with, and orphaned by, the disease is increasing. These vulnerable and orphaned may be stigmatised and can suffer great trauma and often eventually drop out of school. These children end up in classrooms where the teachers are not formally trained to deal with the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS in the classroom. I am working with colleagues, on a project that seeks to capacity build and empower teachers with life skills to deal with the negative impacts of HIV/AIDS on the quality of education of orphaned and other vulnerable children.
