Highlights
Research and Development The Department is currently involved in the following research projects”” Development and application of an alluvial gold mining system in Zimbabwe namely the Riverbed Mining Project which has generated interest nationwide and the world over. Development of a mine scheduling software for a large local open pit mine with variable ore type and grade constraints. Appropriate hoisting system for small-scale reef mining. Model for buffer mineral reserves planning for local underground mines. Development of a computerized SADC human resources information and evaluation system
Consultancy Service and Projects The department caters for various needs of the mining industry through strategy partnership with other consultants to respond to all industry needs bit or small. In addition to our own laboratories, the department also has access to other laboratories within the University of Zimbabwe and has special arrangements for laboratory facilities in the Institute of Mining Research (IMR). Some of the major and most recent consulting work undertaken in Zimbabwe include: Conceptualization and implementation of a Recovery Plans. Rock mechanics evaluation. Mine Planning and design
Department’s Capacity & Capability Prepare the graduates for entry-level positions in operations and management of mines. Communicate plans, designs, and operational practices to colleagues, mine managers, regulators, and interveners. Demonstrate proficiency in engineering topics related to both surface and underground mining, and further demonstrate proficiency in engineering topics such as rock fragmentation, materials handling, mineral processing, mine surveying, ventilation, and resource/ reserve estimation. Demonstrate the basic knowledge to be able to plan and design mines technically sound, moreover in an ethically, environmentally and socially responsible manner.
Significance for National Development To enable public and private sectors to make meaningful contributions to sustainable development of the minerals industry in Zimbabwe and the Southern African region. We achieve this through provision and maintenance of high quality education, research and development, and industry needs-oriented advisory services.
