Profile 

The current Dean of the FVS is Professor Davies M Pfukenyi. Professor Pfukenyi is a holder of BVSc (UZ, 1992), MVSc (Veterinary Epidemiology, UZ, 1995) and DPhil (Veterinary Epidemiology, UZ, 2003) degrees. He joined the University of Zimbabwe, Clinical Veterinary Studies (CVS) Department in November 2004 as a Veterinary Epidemiology Lecturer for both undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary students. Currently he is an Associate Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology (from January 2011). Prof Pfukenyi’s other areas of expertise are Animal Health Economics, Biostatistics and Research Methods. He has also been the Chairperson of the CVS Department (February 2007 – September 2012). 

Before joining the University, Professor Pfukenyi was employed at the Central Veterinary Laboratories (CVL), Diagnostics and Research Branch in Harare where he went through the ranks of a Veterinary Research Officer, Senior Veterinary Research Officer to that of a Principal Veterinary Research Officer. Prof Pfukenyi’s research interests are focused on the epidemiology of zoonoses (diseases transmissible between animals and humans) at the domestic-wildlife-human interface and vector-borne parasitic diseases. He is also interested in animal diseases of economic importance and quality assurance control systems for food safety of animal origin. His strongest experience lies in the design and analyses of field and experimental studies, supervision and mentoring of post-graduate students as well as coordinating and managing multidisciplinary projects. Currently, Prof Pfukenyihas published 33 peer-reviewed journal articles mainly in the field of epidemiology and two book chapters.
