University celebrates 50 years of service to the nation.

Friday the 11 th of February marks a very important event on the calendar of the University of Zimbabwe as the University celebrates 50 years of service to the nation.  

The University was incorporated by Royal Charter on 11 February 1955 as the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland . In 1971, the University gained its full status as the University of Rhodesia . In 1980, the University became the University of Zimbabwe .

While the official launch of the jubilee celebrations is scheduled for this Friday in (New Lecture Theatre) NLT 400, a number of events have been lined up culminating in the graduation ceremony to be held in August. A number of eminent guests who have been associated with the University over the years are expected at the official launch.

“The University of Zimbabwe at 50: Reflections on the past , present and future from a global perspective.”

The Lecture will be delivered by Honourable Dr Herbert Murerwa (MP).

His discussants will be:

  2. Mr B. Itayi (Malawian Ambassador)
  3. Professor G Kahari (UZ)

Time: 0930 hours for 1000 hours (Tea will be served during this time)
