Form 1 students at Midlands Christian College in Gweru, Zimbabwe were asked to write a piece
explaining any aspect of maths in everyday terms. One of them, Mashura Nkhoma, produced the following:
I saw a big woman sitting on a small baby. The baby cried out for help but the big woman kept on laughing, happy to be an improper fraction. Then the big woman saw that it was wrong what she was doing and took the little baby and told her to sit on her lap. The small baby came and sat on the lap and they became a proper fraction.
The big woman didn't feel quite okay. So she asked the small baby if she could always stand on her side so that the could be a mixed number. So the baby agreed. But the big woman didn't feel okay and they started all over again.
Other stories/pictures illustrating some mathematical concept, like `parallel lines', `infinity', `multiplication' are welcomed. More than welcomed!!
