Food, Nutrition & Family Sciences

The The Institute of Food, Nutrition and Family Sciences (IFNFS) was formally established by the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) as an independent strategic unit (Senate Decision Sen/64/86 of 1986). This strategic unit was established to provide Zimbabwe and other countries in the Southern African Developmetn Community (SADC) region with professional human resources that is able to perceive and analyse food and nutrition problems from the individual and family level up to national level, ultimately culminating in recommendations for sustainable strategies to reduce these problems and accelerate overall national development.

The establishment of IFNFS in Zimbabwe fitted in strategically with Zimbabwe's position as the coordinating organ for Food Security in the region.

An Advisory Committee with representation from industry, government and non-governmental organizations as well as local and international institutions assists the Institute in mobilising operational resources, books and equipment required for teaching and research.The institute is currently operating as a department in the Faculty of Science.

Mission Statement

The Institute seeks to produce dynamic men and women, equipped with professional and entrepreneurial skills that meet the needs of all food and nutrition- related sectors.
The Institute's core business is:
Offering specialised training in food and nutrition sciences based on up-to-date curricula and pedagogic techniques.

Offering affordable and reputable short-term professional training programmes for personal development and career enhancement for relevant sectors.

Undertaking, in partnership with industry and the community, innovative research and offering consulting services that address business and community problems.

Creating awareness of the importance of science and technology in the whole food chain from production through processing, marketing and utilisation.

Being available to advise Government and the public on all problems related to food and nutrition.

Vision

Our vision is to be an internationally recognised centre for food science and nutrition training and research, offering high quality and affordable training programmes and undertaking problem-solving research that meets the needs of our country.
