  • From the Chair...

UNESCO Chairs are established under the University Education Twining and Networking Scheme (UNITWIN) Programme, launched in 1992 in accordance with a resolution adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO at its 26th session (1991). They are projects that deal with training and research activities in major fields of knowledge within UNESCO’s competence such as Education, HIV & AIDS, Human Rights, Cultural Development, Environment, Basic and Engineering Sciences, and Communication. The principal beneficiaries are institutions of higher learning in developing countries and countries in transition.

The UNESCO Chair on HIV & AIDS and Education is under the auspices of the UN Global Initiative on Education and HIV & AIDS (EDUCAIDS) adopted by all the ten co-sponsors of UNAIDS in March 2004 in Livingstone, Zambia, to support countries by developing comprehensive education sector -based responses to HIV/AIDS, with a focus on children and young people, especially those who are most vulnerable.

The UNESCO Chair on HIV & AIDS and Education at the University of Zimbabwe is a project aimed at reducing the prevalence of HIV infection and its impact through the integration of teaching and research into service activities. The Chair run’s an HIV & AIDS/STI prevention and support centre as well as integrated research, training, information and documentation activities on HIV & AIDS and STIs. Funded by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), this Chair is established by UNESCO Harare Cluster Office in collaboration with United Nations Country Team; Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Zimbabwe; and the National Universities Commission of Nigeria. Though currently national, the Chair is expected to become regional operating through partnerships with major organizations involved in the fight against HIV & AIDS the world over.

In an effort to satisfy the information needs of one or many users wherever they may reside, independent of the location of the resources, UZ’s UNESCO Chair on HIV & AIDS and Education Virtual Library acts as a web catalog with varying categories, facilitating easy access to online reference materials. The material contained here will directly benefit UZ students, students from higher institutions of learning in Zimbabwe, the SADC region and sub-Saharan Africa.
