Rehabilitation Unit

These programmes are producing high quality graduates in the bid to reduce the massive treatment/human resources gap in the provision of rehabilitation services nationally.

Rehabilitation is a set of interventions designed to optimize functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions in interaction with their environment. Rehabilitation services are recognized as a core component of the health care continuum. In line with the UN Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) 2030, particularly goal three (Health for all at all ages) and the WHO’s Rehabilitation 2030 Call for Action, we want to ensure the availability of a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation workforce through training. We would also want to ensure both community and hospital rehabilitation services are available. For complex conditions like spinal cord injuries, brain injuries etc, we envision specialised rehabilitation units for restoration of function and quality of life. These will need specialist training, and we intend to address it through introducing specialist Masters programmes in Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy and Community Rehabilitation by 2025. As the numbers of Audiologists and Speech and Language pathologists from our programmes increase, we will introduce Masters programmes in the fields. We are saying, there is no health for all at all ages without a properly trained multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team (SDG3).
