Description & Requirements

The Department of social work offers a four year Bachelors Science Honours in Social Work degree as its main undergraduate programme. This is one of the highly attractive and widely sought programmes within the Univeristy. In terms of entry requirement, a candidate must satisfy the minimum conditions for entrance to degree studies as prescribed in the General Regulations and must pass the designed screening test.

In addition, the department also offers a number of Postgraduate programmes. Among them is a Post Gradate diploma in Social Work. In terms of the entry requirements for the Post-Graduate Diploma in Social Work, a candidate must be a holder of a Social Science degree from any recognised University, have satisfied the minimum conditions for entrance to Post-Graduate Diploma studies as prescribed in the University’s General Regulations and pass the designed screening test.

Futhermore, the department offers a generic Master of Science in Social Work degree, a number of specialised Masters programmes, MPhil. and DPhil. programmes. For the generic Master of Science in Social Work degree, a candidate must be a holder of a Bachelor of Social Work Honours degree with a 2.2 or better degree class from a recognised University and pass the designed screening test, and must be a registered social worker in terms of the Social Workers Act (chapter 27.21). In order for one to qualify for a specialised Masters of Science in Social Work programme, he or she must be a holder of a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) degree with a 2.2 or better degree class from a recognised University plus at least two years of post-qualifying practice experience in the field of social work, or; be a holder of a good Master of social work degree from a recognised university and must be a registered social worker in terms of the Social Workers Act (chapter 27.21).
