Welcome to the Faculty of Social Studies

The Faculty of Social Studies houses eight departments made up of six teaching departments and two research centres which offer Masters and Doctoral programs. Social Studies has on offer a wide array of programmes and research interests for the 2500 students with a staff establishment of 108 lecturers. The faculty plays an important role to national and regional manpower needs by producing sought after graduates employed in the public and private sectors, NGOs and parastatals. Graduate students have the priviledge of being supervised by contemporary researchers and undertake cutting-edge research in all social science fields.

Part 1 Core Courses at 1st Semester in RUP

RUP 101 Introduction to Planning (12 units): The aim of the course is to equip students with the techniques of introduction to planning.

RUP 102 Quantitative Techniques (24 units): The course equips the student with quantitative techniques in rural and urban planning.

RUP 109 Environmental Systems (12 units): The course helps students to understand environmental patterns in rural and urban planning.

RUP 150 Design Studio I  (24 units): The course equips students with the necessary drawing techniques.

 

Part 1 Core Courses at 2nd Semester in RUP

RUP102 Quantitative Techniques (24 units): The course equips the student with quantitative techniques in rural and urban planning.

RUP112 Environmental Planning (12 units): The course is premised on the concept of sustainable development.

RUP113 The City in History and Settlement Analysis (12 units): The course introduces students to the origin of human settlements, their growth and resultant settlement patterns.

RUP 150 Design Studio I (24 units): The course equips students with the necessary drawing techniques.

 

Part 2 Courses Core Courses at 1st Semester in RUP

RUP 201 Planning Theory (24 units) with  prerequisite  RUP 101 (24 units): The course defines, explain, justify and criticise planning as an activity and as a body of thought.

RUP 202 Planning Techniques and Methods (12 units) with its prerequisite RUP 102 (12 units):      

Students would learn research methods in rural and urban planning.

RUP 205 Environmental Design I (24 units): The course gives study of the methods and techniques used in preparation of designing site plans and layout plans.

RUP 208 Introduction to Water Supply and Sewerage (12 units): This course aims at equipping students of rural and urban planning the importance of water supply and waste water disposal.

RUP 211 Rural Planning, Society and Ecology (12 units): The course covers rural planning, common property, natural resource management and resource tenure.

RUP 250 Design Studio II (24 units) with its prerequisite RUP 150: The course gives students practical experience in designing.

 

Part 2 Courses Core Courses at 2nd Semester in RUP

RUP 209 Geographic Information Systems and Planning (12 units): Equips students with techniques to plan according to geographical and systematic planning.

RUP 210 Introduction to Road and Building Infrastructure (12 units): The course equips students with techniques to plan how to design road and building infrastructure.

RUP 212 Rural Planning, The Economy and the State (12 units): The course helps to understand management structures related to rural planning.

 

Part 3 Core Courses at 1st Semester in RUP

RUP 301 Principles and Practice of Planning Law (24 units): This course enables students to understand evolution, planning law, acquisition and disposal of land.

RUP 302 Environmental Design II (24 units) with prerequisite RUP 205: This is an advanced study of environmental urban design.

RUP 311 Valuation and Property Development (24 units): The advanced study of valuation property development process and concepts.

RUP 314 Regional Economic Theory  (12 units): The course looks into dynamics of spatial development in the framework of regional economics.

RUP 350 Design Studio III (24 units): The study leads to the knowledge of detailed layout plans of residential, commercial and industrial land uses.

 

Part 3 Core Courses at 1st Semester in RUP

RUP 301 Principles and Practice of Planning Law (24 units): This course enables students to understand evolution, planning law, acquisition and disposal of land.

RUP 302 Environmental Design II (24 units) with prerequisite RUP 205: This is an advanced study of environmental urban design.

RUP 311 Valuation and Property Development (24 units): The advanced study of valuation property development process and concepts.

RUP 317 Regional Planning Techniques and Methods (12 units): This course is about understanding regional planning computations.

RUP 350 Design Studio III (24 units): The study leads to the knowledge of detailed layout plans of residential, commercial and industrial land uses.

RUP 404 Regional Planning (24 units): The course teaches critical analysis of the development of regional planning in terms of its evolution.

RUP 410  Urban Development and Management (12 units): Helps understand framework for urban development and management, urban design and urban economy.

RUP 411 Planning Thought and Practice (12 units): Teaches to think analytically and critically on planning theories in rural and urban planning.        

RUP 450 Regional Studio IV (24 units): The course equips the planner with the knowledge of how to knit the various issues at play in regional spatial planning.

RUP 470 Dissertation/Design Project (24 units): The course enables the student to show capacity in research on a particular area in planning.

RUP 401 Professional Planning Practice (12 units): The course teaches professionalism in rural and urban planning.

RUP 404 Regional Planning (24 units): The course teaches critical analysis of the development of regional planning in terms of its evolution.

RUP 416 Urban Policy and Planning (12 units): The course helps to understand policy, art, craft and signs of urban policy and planning issues.

RUP 450 Regional Studio IV (24 units): The course equips the planner with the knowledge of how to knit the various issues at play in regional spatial planning.

RUP 470 Dissertation/Design Project (24 units): The course enables the student to show capacity in research on a particular area in planning.
