Welcome to the Faculty of Social Studies
The Faculty of Social Studies houses eight departments made up of six teaching departments and two research centres which offer Masters and Doctoral programs. Social Studies has on offer a wide array of programmes and research interests for the 2500 students with a staff establishment of 108 lecturers. The faculty plays an important role to national and regional manpower needs by producing sought after graduates employed in the public and private sectors, NGOs and parastatals. Graduate students have the priviledge of being supervised by contemporary researchers and undertake cutting-edge research in all social science fields.

Entry Requirements: 3 “A” Level passes plus Mathematics C or better at ‘O’ level and a Science Subject.
First Year Core Courses at 1st and 2nd Semesters in Psychology PSY 100 Introduction to Psychology (24 units): The course focuses on learning, memory, human development, motivation and emotions PSY101 Social Psychology (24 Units): This course introduces students to history of psychology, person perception and non-verbal communication and attitude change.
Second Year Courses Offered at 1st Semester in Psychology PSY200 Research Methods in Psychology (24 units): The course is about formulating research proposal. PSY201 Statistics and Computing (24 units): The course teaches definition and overview of statistics and statistical samples. PSY202 Psychobiology: This course focuses on the anatomy of central nervous system and non-visual sensations PSY 204 Child Development: The course has linguistical behaviour on the growing up of a child. PSY208 Sensation and Perception: This course covers detection, recognition, discrimination, measurement, scaling and adaption level.
Second Year Courses offered at 2nd Semester in Psychology PSY200 Research Methods in Psychology (24 units): The course is about formulating research proposal. PSY201 Statistics and Computing (24 units): The course teaches definition and overview of statistics and statistical samples. PSY203 Principles of Learning: The course contains the principality of learning PSY205 Comparative Psychology: The course aims at equipping the student with comparative approaches. PSY207 Adolescence and Adulthood: The course focuses on adolescence development in early childhood, middle adulthood and late adulthood.
Third Year Courses offered at 1st semester in Psychology PSY301 Psychometrics: The course enables one to carry psychological testing such as ethics, social consideration and psychometric theory. PSY 302 Psychopathology: The course looks at abnormal behaviour, description of the DSM IV, mood disorders etc. PSY303 Applied Principles of Learning: The course covers, therapies based on operant conditioning, increasing behaviour with operant techniques. PSY306 Psychology and Law: The course covers crime and its causes, psychological understanding of crime and detecting deceptions. PSY307 Cognition: The course covers pattern recognition. PSY309 Organisational Psychology: The course covers psychological differences which are encountered in an organization.
Third Year Courses at 2nd Semester in Psychology PSY304 Personality: The course introduces the concept of psychoanalysis. PSY305 Systems and Theories: It focuses on the theories that can be applied in different systems. PSY308 Psychotherapy: The course covers assessment of psychological disorders. PSY312 Personnel Psychology: The course looks at issues of recruitment and section boards in an organisation PSY313 Consumer Psychology: The course looks at issues that short-changed consumers in marketing. PSY310 Forensic Psychology: The course looks at interface between psychology and law. PSY311 Contemporary Issues in Psychology: The course focuses on current and emerging perspectives, theories, field and methodologies in psychology. PSY370 Dissertation: Research Project
