The Department of African Languages and Literature offers a broad range of programmes for the following language majors, Kiswahili, Ndebele, Shona and Tonga. In our programmes we offer a range of professional courses which are interdisciplinary in nature to encourage intellectual exchange across disciplines. Our programmes help students achieve their highest potential in terms of excellence in research, teaching, scholarship, community engagement, revitalising, documenting, promoting, preserving, safeguarding and developing African languages, literature and culture as well as indigenous knowledge systems. The programmes produce well-rounded graduates who will serve the Zimbabwean, regional and global community in its diversity.  The following are the programmes on offer;

HLG & TON 4 'A' level passes in Ndebele or Shona. Applicants must be Tonga First language speakers. Applicants with a Diploma in Education must have a merit and be Tonga first language speakers.

Bachelor of Arts Dual Honours Degree in History and Tonga

 

HHS & TON 4

A' level passes in Ndebele or Shona and History, Applicants must be Tonga first language speakers.

Bachelor of Arts Dual Honours Degree in Linguistics and Kiswahili

 

HLG & KIS 4 A' level Language related subject, Ndebele or Shona. Applicants with post A' level relevant qualification or with relevant work experience may be admitted with approval of senate.

Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in African Literary and Cultural Studies

 

HALCS 4 'A' level passes in Ndebele or Shona. Applicants for Tonga must be Tonga First language speakers. Applicants with a Diploma in Education must have a merit and be Tonga first language speakers.
