Heritage and African Renaissance |
Students should use their knowledge of the nature of African societies, their historical experiences to come up with theories and practical ways of improving the welfare of communities. Students should help communities develop confidence in themselves, use heritage to cultivate the sense of identity, being and belonging. The student learns about the African Renaissance and should come up with social innovations that improve the lives of the communities. |
| MHRMP502 | Remote Sensing for Cultural Heritage | This module introduces remote sensing as a powerful, non-invasive suite of technologies essential for the modern identification and management of cultural heritage sites. Students will learn to harness data from satellite platforms, aerial photography, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to survey vast landscapes with high precision. The module places a heavy emphasis on advanced sensors, such as LiDAR that can detect hidden subterranean features and archaeological cropmarks invisible to the naked eye. Practical sessions involve the integration of these datasets into Geographic Information Systems (GIS), allowing for complex spatial analysis and 3D reconstruction of ancient environments. By the end of the module, participants will be equipped with the technical skills to manage heritage at a landscape scale, ensuring the digital preservation of fragile historic sites. |

Cultural Heritage Economics |
Students should produce cultural products and services from the heritage that will contribute to GDP, GNP, per Capita and other avenues of development. They learn how to patent their products and be able to cost and market them. The module teaches students to consider roadside or airport art, galleries, cultural villages, museums, site museums, cultural souvenirs and curios, heritage based brands, indigenous medicines, traditional cuisines, etc as possible heritage businesses in addition to tourism ventures) causing industrialisation. Students should work with cultural economists as well as statisticians in order to understand the valuing of heritage assets and products. |

Heritage Conservation |
Students will learn about care and conservation of heritage where they acquire knowledge on conservation of artistic expressions, architectural heritage, places, forests, soils, animals (biodiversity), safeguarding performances and crafts, conservation of biodiversity as well as World Heritage. They should be able to contribute to policy formulation and making decisions on matters that affect conservation. This includes decisions on when and how to engage in an intervention. |
| MIDAH501 | Digital Skills for Masters | The Information and Digital Skills module for Postgraduate students introduces students to the tenets of conducting scientific research in alignment with the current scholarly communication landscape. Module aims to conduct effective literature searches and synthesise evidence, understand academic integrity and reference management, navigate the academic publishing landscape, effectively manage research data, collaborate in research and identify funding opportunities, and communicate research findings and track research impact. |
| MHRMP505 | Intellectual Property and Heritage | The module equips students with knowledge and understanding of intellectual property law, copyright, trademarks, heritage brands and logo protection and issues of heritage ownership to be able to protect their own creations or innovations. It explores the extent of individual knowledge and skills vs communal knowledge of heritage components, heritage and entrepreneurship in a globalised world, knowledge protection and archiving in African communities. The issues dealt with also extend to oral approaches/oral archives, traditions, written and digital documentation. Case studies from Africa such as the Swarkopmund protocol and the Hoodia case in South Africa and others beyond Africa will be examined. Students will have a project/seminar presentation on IP and Legal issues around heritage. |
| MHRMP506 | Heritage-based Materials Production and Analysis | Students use knowledge and skills from materials analysis to produce heritage-based products and services for the benefit of contemporary and future communities. The module also looks at materials production and analyses as invaluable ways of encouraging resuscitation of past technologies and means of wealth creation, preservation, conservation, safeguarding of indigenous technologies and heritage values. The module will lead to rejuvenation of societies with regards to revitalisation and revival of heritage inspired cultural creative industries, performances, protection of intellectual property, branding, trademarks and copyrights. Students should be able to extract the technology inherent in a heritage product and use it to produce new goods and services |

Cultural Heritage and Information Technologies |
Students should produce digital products and be able to use ICTs to document, analyse, process, monitor and conserve heritage. The students learn the technologies relevant in the collection, documentation, analysis, processing heritage information and production of heritage products. The main interest is in ICT aspects such as AutoCAD, GIS, 3D modelling, Multimedia/VR/AU technologies, Database systems: eg. ARCHES and programming. The use of technology in monitoring of cultural heritage, reconstructing heritage objects and sites, e-Research, enhancement of visitor experience at cultural sites and museums, and the use of technology in sustainable tourism (environmental, economic, socio-cultural), contribution of ICT to cultural heritage management process are some of the issues that will be in the module. |
| MHRMP508 | Community Project | Students undertake a Community project where they apply knowledge, skills and experiences from the programme to produce products (goods and services) that can be used in transforming heritage value into economic value or social value. They may work on archaeo-tourism projects that help communities. |
| MHRMP570 | Dissertation | The dissertation shall be on an approved topic and should be submitted at the end of Part 2 of the programme. The topic should satisfy the expectations of Education 5.0 by focusing on transforming heritage knowledge into production of goods and services, being able to solve community challenges or being innovative to cause communities to behave in certain beneficial ways. It may be on digital creations with educational,economic and social value or that enhances service delivery in relevant stakeholder institutions. |
