Introduction to Philosophy and Critical Thinking |
This is a core module compulsory for all students starting their Honours degree in Philosophy, Ethics and Human Development. The course aims at introducing students to the nature, origin and scope of Philosophy as a discipline. It uses key concepts, development of ideas and key philosophers in Philosophy. The course lays the foundation for philosophical reasoning by use of all the branches of Philosophy namely, Logic, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Ethics, Aesthetics and second order philosophies such as Philosophy of Religion, Political Philosophy etc. The course is a prerequisite to the study of Knowledge and Reality. In addition to the above, the module course equips students with formal skills and techniques for proving the validity or invalidity of simple and complex arguments. It also aims at inculcating in students important critical thinking skills that will enable them to solve both simple and complex problems. It aims to impart a functional ability to reason well and to improve analytical skills and instincts, which aspects are critical for innovation and development. |

Human acts, sources of morality, moral obligation to oneself – honesty, faith, hope; to his fellow human beings; sympathy, love, tolerance; rights and duties. Ethics in selected religions. |

Critical thinking must applied in societal and national development initiatives. As such, this module aims at addressing issues of belief in paranormal, pseudoscience, and millennialism which are prevalent in our different societies through the application of logic and critical thinking skills. Particularly, it seeks to test these beliefs through the application of rhetorical analysis and critical thinking to discourse advancing extraordinary claims. The module equips students with the various forms of reasoning which essential to fuel innovative national development. |

Environmental Ethics and Climate Change |
This module looks at environmental management ethics, policy, climate change, disaster preparedness and management. This is a very important module given that environmental issues are topical today, climate change is real and natural disasters are upon us. It introduces students to key issues in environmental ethics, the study of (a) the ethical relations and commitments of humans towards the non-human world, (b) the ethical standing of the non-human world itself, relating this study to the applied case of man-made climate change. The course is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part focuses on the conceptions of the environment in various traditions, and on the main theories of ethics, value, rights and duties. The practical part looks at applications of these theories, investigating the existing ethical approaches to the environment, before looking in more detail at the challenges of environmental destruction and manmade climate change. |

| HPEHD370 | Work-Related Learning | Students shall engage in activities whose cumulative effect is to satisfy requirements for industrial attachment. They go into communities and map (document) heritage resources in those communities. The record will be used by investors, rural and town planners. Students are expected to come up with databases of the heritage recorded with an articulation of its value/significance to the community documented. These will be presented in the form of a seminar with the final submission being a written report. |

In ensuring industrialization and innovation, emphasis in this module will be placed upon the manager’s social and environmental responsibilities to a wide variety of stakeholders, including employees, customers and the public. Ethical dilemmas and decision-making frameworks and approaches at the personal, organizational and societal levels will be explored. Student engagement in real-world applications and issues are a critical portion of the module. |
