| Module Code | Module Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| MBG 501 | Basic Microbiology and Fermentation I | Covers classification of microorganisms: basic bacteriology, virology and parasitology: techniques for culturing microorganisms; aerobes and anaerobes: metabolism: mutations and gene mapping: bioenergetics. |
| MBG 503 | Recombinant DNA Technology I |
Introduces students to Biochemistry, including purification and characterisation of proteins, humoral immunity and immunochemical techniques, and enzyme kinetics. Cloning vectors (plasmids, bacteriophages, cosmids and YACS). DNA restriction and modifying enzymes. Creation of Cdna and genomic libraries. Analysis of recombinants by DNA purification and characterization. Southern and Northern blotting, nucleic acid probes (preparation and labelling). |
| MBG 504 | Recombinant DNA Technology II | This module covers in vitro amplification of DNA by PCR and its various applications, sequencing, site-directed in vitro mutagenesis, RFLPs, and RAPDs. It also covers expression systems (bacteria, yeast, insect, and mammalian) and the detection of expressed products. |
| MBG 513 | Introduction to Genomics | Describes how genomic sequencing data has been created and can be used to interrogate biological systems. The course covers next-generation sequencing, gene, genome, and protein databases; alignment of DNA and protein sequences; DNA and protein motif discovery; homology and phylogenetics; expression profiling and protein structure prediction. The students will work through examples of how these tools are being used to understand the microbes in our environment and improve crop traits and human health. |
| MBG 505 | Fermentation II | Mathematical models of fermentation; kinetics and stoichiometry of microbial growth; examples of industrial fermentation; construction of yeast genetics systems with greater fermentation efficiency; fermentation design and control: downstream processing; applications and implications. |
| MBG 506 | Enzyme Technology | A study of enzyme kinetics; ligands and functional group modification; immobilized enzymes; industrial scale and enzyme purification; substrate analogues; bioreactors. |
| MBG 509 | Molecular Virology | Introduction to viruses, composition, structure, classification and nomenclature of plant viruses. Genome organisation and expression strategies. Detection and diagnosis of viral diseases. Transmission, virus movement in nature. Economic importance and antiviral strategies. |
| MBG 512 | Plant Biotechnology |
Introducing students from a broad background of scientific backgrounds to plant biotechnology. The basis of all plant biotechnology is plant tissue culture and this will be covered in detail with particular reference to Zimbabwean applications such as micropropagation and virus elimination. |
| MBG 570 | Dissertation Project | Introduces students to research project studies, ethics in scientific research, powerpoint presentations, research project proposal presentations, and research project write-ups. |
