MASTER OF MINERAL AND GEOLOGICAL EXPLORATION (MMGE)
| Module Code | Module Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| MMGE501 | Metallogeny – Core |
This course covers the regional metallogeny as well as the different hydrothermal, sedimentary and ortho-magnetic deposits. The influence of metallogenic cycles through space and time on the heterogeneous distribution of mineral provinces and ore deposit-types. The role of tectonic processes in the formation of various mineral deposit-types in specific zones in the crust.Examples of major deposit-types in specific zones in Zimbabwe and world over discussed and how this helps to target giant deposits |
| MMGE502 | Ore Deposit Models – Core |
Classification and formation of major deposit-types from:
|
| MMGE503 | Hydrocarbon Geology –Core | This module describes the different petroleum system elements and processes. The module analyses the origin, types and characteristics of source rocks. Reservoir potential evaluation as well as exploration and development of petroleum are the main emphasis of the module. Ancient and modern sedimentary deposits, types of sedimentary deposits, depositional processes and resulting deposits and sedimentary structures, as well as principles of facies analysis and models, basin analysis and geomorphological contributions are also covered. |
| MMGE504 | Mineral Economics – Optional | The course covers basics of mineral economics (global trends, supply and demand, mine management strategies, stock exchange and investment in the mining |
| MMGE505 | Mining Law – Optional | The course is designed to response to the growing significance of legal issues surrounding exploration and mining industry. The course will give students analytical understanding of the key legal issues in Zimbabwe as well as in the global context. |
| MMGE506 | Orebody Modelling – Core |
Practical Applications of a Computer Orebody Modelling System 2D and 3D modelling using different applications |
| MMGE507 | Exploration Design and Management – Core |
The course involves application of geochemical exploration techniques, Geophysical exploration techniques, Geobotany, Geostatistics, Exploration drilling and Project management |
| MMGE508 |
Mineral prospectivity mapping in a GIS Environment – Core |
Generally, no one exploration technique is used to discover large deposits, as several factors could have been involved in the formation of the deposit, hence, this course finally integrates various exploration techniques. The focus is on identification of spatial relationships of geological attributes where most of the results from the exploration techniques highlighted above are integrated via GIS to zero in on the target e.g. using index overlay methods, Bayesian methods and fuzzy logic. Case studies for mineral prospectivity mapping for local and world deposits are discussed e.g. Base metal exploration in Lake MacDougall Area, Zimbabwe. |
| MMGE509 | Ground water Exploration – Optional | The course focuses on developing an understanding of how hydrogeological assessments are structured. The students develop ability in hydrogeological interpretation and water resources assessment for different geological settings, climates, and socio-economic requirements. |
| MMGE510 | Field work – Core | Mines and exploration visits to assess on-going exploration cases |
| MMGE570 | Dissertation – Core | Independent investigation of geological problems relating to mineral exploration. Students will be introduced to scientific research, and allowed to acquire the general skills essential for academic and research study, whilst extending their knowledge by introducing them to current topics of research as well as practice in the skills that are relevant to performing research. The research project is a core course, that is, a student has to pass the project in order to graduate. |
