MASTER OF VETERINARY SCIENCE DEGREE IN RUMINANT MEDICINE

COURSES

PART 1 (First Year)

The programme consists of 10 core courses, each requiring 40-60 contact hours of lectures, seminars, tutorial, laboratory and clinical fieldwork.

1.         Introduction to Veterinary Medicine [10 contact hours]

2.         Reviews of Diseases

3.         Veterinary Profession and the Wildlife Industry

4.         Study of Clinicopathogenesis, Clinocopathology and Clinial signs Of Diseases

5.         Study of Postmortem (P.M.) techniques

6.         Study of Diagnosis and Differential Diagnosis

7.         The use of Clinical Pharmacology and treatment in Large Animal Diseases

8.         Biostatistics, Veterinary Epidemiology and Prevenetion of Diseases

9.         Appraisal of Herd Health Programmes

10.       Communication and Extension in Veterinary Medicine

11.       Dissertation

12.       Schedule of Practicals.

  1. i)In Part 1 (First year) of this Masters Programme the students will be required to take part and participate in practicals as shown below:

- Large animal clinics

- Ambulatory clinics

  • Applied Herd Health programmes
  • Tutorials/Seminars/Rounds

 

PART II (Second Year)

The candidate will conduct research in the field of Clinical Veterinary Studies on a topic of their choice which is approved by the Departmental Board and the Supervisor.

MASTER OF VETERINARY SCIENCE DEGREE IN REPRODUCTION AND HERD HEALTH

COURSES:

1.         Reproduction hormones and reproductive physiology

2.         Biochemistry of hormones and techniques of hormone assay.

3.         Diagnostic techniques in reproduction and artificial manipulation and control of     reproductive cycles.

4.         Fertility and reproductive health for dairy and beef cattle

5.         Fertility and produciton in pigs and small ruminants.

6.         Fertility and stud farm management in horses

7.         Udder health and milk quality

8.         Preventive medicine programmes for cattle, horses, pigs and small ruminants, Livestock produciton systems, with regard to nutrition, housing, hygiene, social interactions, stress and general management. Disease control and eradication, animal health economics.

9.         Pathology and microbiology of reproductive diseases, Post-mortem procedures,     histopathology and histochemistry in reproductive diseases, sample collection, processing         and examination for bacterial, mycotic, viral and protozoal reproductive diseases,      Immunology and serological tests in reproduction.

10.       Epidemiology Biostatistics and Research Methodology

           

PART II of the course:

Comprise research on a subject of the choice of the candidate with the approval of the Supervisor and the Departmental Board, and continued participation in clinical/fieldwork
