Desired Qualifications and Competencies

The applicant must have:

  • a Bachelor of Science Degree in Library and Information Sciences and a Masters’ degree in Library and Information Sciences with specialisation in IT related courses or a Master of Information Science degree, both from recognised institutions.
  • at least five years’ postgraduate experience in an academic library. 
  • at least two years’ experience with integrated library management systems.

The desired candidate will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of non-MARC metadata standards, have familiarity with Library Technology Standards and Protocols such as Machine-Readable Cataloguing (MARC); Resources Description and Access (RDA); Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR); Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD); Open Access Initiative – Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) and Millennium Web Access Management (WAM). 

He/she should also possess working knowledge of the database technologies such as MySQL and have experience with supporting discovery and Library Statistical Standards, data, tools and assessment.    

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties for the Systems Librarian shall include:

  1. Administratively, the candidate must be able to:
    • manage and supervise the Bibliographic Services Team;
    • service the Library Committee as the Secretary;
    • develop and revise policies and Standard Operating Procedures, including workflow related to assigned areas of responsibility.
  2. Development of Library collection, that is,
    • to prepare Request for Proposal documents for core textbooks, evaluate bids by suppliers and produce adjudication reports with recommendations to the Procurement Management Unit;
    • to coordinate the preparation of the library budget for collection development;
    • to maintain an inventory of the Library Collection and provide oversight in the selection of electronic resources;
    • to ensure that all subscribed electronic resources are registered with publishers.
  3. Bibliographic Control, that is,
    • to coordinate cataloguing, classification and the provision of subject access to information;
    • to maintain authority and quality control for the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC);
    • to monitor the market regarding implementation of new and emerging library application.
  4. Training services, that is,
    • to provide training to Bibliographic Services Team and Faculty Librarians;
    • to conduct Information Literacy training.
  5. Research support, that is,
    • to maintain the list of Accredited Journals;
    • to work with the ICT Projects Manager to manage the content of the Library Website and to ensure that all digital repositories are running smoothly.
