Departmental Overview

The Department of Surgery at the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health Sciences forms part of the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate student. The Department of Surgery has 8 subspecialties namely:   

  • General Surgery   
  • Orthopaedics   
  • Neurosurgery   
  • Urology   
  • Otorhinolaryngology   
  • Cardiovascular   
  • Paediatric Surgery   
  • Plastic Surgery

 

The Department of Surgery prides itself on providing an outstanding clinical service, excellent teaching to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and world-class research.

The department teaches + 300 undergraduate students (MBChB Part III and Part V). The students do clinical rotations in all the above mentioned divisions and assessments are done at the end of each rotation for each student. Students receive lectures, tutorials, bedside teaching and attend outpatients clinics.

The department has M Med postgraduate students in the following disciplines General Surgery, Urology and Neurosurgery and COSESCA students in Orthopaedic Surgery and General Surgery.

On completion the undergraduate trainee should be competent to manage surgical condition and meet all the community needs in terms of surgical care.  The postgraduate surgical trainee on completion would be a medical expert in treating surgical conditions and their complications.  He/She should possess the requisite knowledge, to be a very good reputable teacher and be an ambassador of the University worldwide.  

 

On completion the undergraduate trainee should be competent to manage surgical condition and meet all the community needs in terms of surgical care.  The postgraduate surgical trainee on completion would be a medical expert in treating surgical conditions and their complications.  He/She should possess the requisite knowledge, to be a very good reputable teacher and be an ambassador of the University worldwide.  Research is one of the major thrust of the Department.  Together with the input of the Research Support Centre, research is taught and implemented in the early years of surgical training.  The Department aims to make the UZ more visible on the international academic map through research.  All our postgraduate surgical programmes have a thesis/dissertation as part of the degree programme.  The thrust for Departmental research are in the following areas:   

  1. Cancer Surgery & Research
  2. Minimally invasive surgery – Endoscopy & Laparoscopy
  3. Surgical outcome (HIV positive patients vs HIV negative patients)
  4. Nutrition in Surgical patients
  5. Trauma – all aspects
  6. Surgical site infections

 

Outstanding Achievements

1. Paediatric Unit   

We successfully achieved a milestone by separating Siamese twins. 

2. Cardiothoracic Unit

Despite our low resources we successfully introduced open heart surgery.  To date we have successfully done 93 cardiac surgeries.
