The Department of Biomedical Sciences was formed in response to Education 5.0 which was espoused in the University of Zimbabwe’s 2019-2025 Strategic Plan. The Biomedical Sciences department is one of the 12 departments in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. It is one of the new departments in the FMHS which houses the prestigious Biomedical Sciences degree programme which was designed in response to the needs of the communities and Industry in Zimbabwe.

The Department is comprised of units which include the Physiology and Anatomy and currently offers undergraduate programmes in Biomedical Sciences with pathways to programmes such as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Pharmacy and Drug Discovery, Forensic Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical informatics and Medical Laboratory Sciences among other programmes. The department also offers intercalation programmes in Anatomy and Physiology, MMed Science in Anatomy and Physiology programmes with the aim of transforming and modernising the national health system through the development of drugs and appliances for the management of health problems in the country, research in health care, development and production of technologies that contribute to the latest advances in medical science in order to generate solutions in community-based projects that address local health needs.
