Construction Technology

This module is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills necessary to understand the different components and the general methods of construction of high rise buildings. This module equips students with building functional requirements as well as technologies and processes used in building construction. The module also focuses on sustainability features implemented in modern high-rise buildings and the contributions of high-rise buildings in promoting sustainable construction.
BE222 Construction Practicum This module involves students working on a hands-on infrastructure project. Projects will involve general bricklaying, electrical installation and finishes. Students will be expected to carry out the physical activities regarding the areas listed above. The module provides hands on training for the students on the use of hand tools, power tools and some machines in the construction industry. Within a nominated project, students are expected to develop, design, estimate, plan, construct, and manage the processes. The emphasis in the module is on the students learning by doing and having a hands-on approach. Students take theory learned in other modules and apply it in practice. Students are expected to be creative in dealing with situations that they have not come across before. Each time the module is offered it will be based on a different project so that students will need to solve new problems and address novel issues.
HADT301 Work Integrated Learning This is an experiential learning experience opportunity accorded to all categories of students to enhance their graduate employability attributes. The students can attach to a company, non-profit, governmental or community-based organisation. Through direct observation, reflection and evaluation students are expected to gain an understanding of the real world of work. Further to this, students are expected to utilise their design education in helping host organisations solve their problems, where possible. The internship shall be one semester long
BE223 Structural analysis This module covers classical theory of structures and its application in the analysis of load-bearing structures such as residential buildings, bridges or industrial enclosures. Students learn to analyse the response of linear elastic structures under the actions of mechanical loads as well as actions resulting from environmental effects such as temperature changes and foundation settlements.  Students are provided with an appreciation of the structural behaviour of common structural systems and temporary structures through the calculation of internal structural forces and moments. Students also develop an understanding of typical structural design documentation with a focus on structural drawing and specification details.
BE224 Soil Science and Mechanics This module provides a broad overview of the composition of soils and their behaviour when subjected to forces or displacements. It focuses on practical assessment of soil properties and behaviour, supplemented by relevant theory and application. The objective of this module is to give a broad-based introduction to the construction of structures and a more rigorous introduction to soil as a construction material. The module concludes with a detailed study of the problems of soil settlement and soil shear strength. Soil laboratory sessions allow students to gain deeper insight into the soil behaviour through hands-on interpretation and experience. Students will also get acquainted to several technical problems and documentation of technical observations. Upon successful completion of the module, students should be able to apply fundamentals of soil mechanics in the analysis, design, and construction of projects.
BE311  Architectural History  This module will introduce students to the evolution of history of architecture from prehistoric to the current period.  It highlights significant events, styles, architects, buildings and other factors that would lead to an understanding of different components, constraints and systems of the work of architecture. The module develops students' abilities to read and understand key aspects of architectural design through case study analysis. Assigned readings complement the lectures to give students an overview of how architectural ideas and aesthetics have evolved. Themes considered may include criticism and critical thinking, impact of industrialisation, impacts of technology, the modern concept of space, debates about style and ornament.
HADT302  Teaching Practicum  This is an experiential learning experience opportunity accorded to students with no prior teaching qualification, to practice teaching. Students will be attached to approved schools where they can get adequate mentoring by qualified teachers. The teaching practicum shall be one semester long
BE321  Architectural Computer Aided Design  This module provides students with a broad introduction into 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and modeling with a focus on construction- and architecture-specific applications. Students will learn how to use CAD software programs to model construction projects, and then create and distribute basic building drawings. Students learn the basic concepts and standard practices necessary for the graphical communication of technical data which includes the reading, interpretation and creation of building drawings and technical sketching.
 BE322

Construction Measurement, Estimation and Tendering

This module examines the principles, procedures and practical application of construction quantities measurement. Students will acquire knowledge of and understand basic concepts of accepted drawing conventions and formats including architectural and engineering drawings and how building specifications are prepared and structured. Students will become aware of the purpose of measurement and estimating in the construction industry and be able to demonstrate how to measure simple architectural and engineering structures using industry accepted methodology. Students will be introduced to the sources of information for estimating and measuring construction projects. Students carry out a series of detailed exercises in construction quantities calculation, measurement and description utilising electronic technology and any available software.
BE323  Construction Site Survey Practice  This is a module aimed at equipping students with plane surveying skills required the construction industry. Emphasis is placed on obtaining field skills in linear measurement and the operation of levels, transits, theodolites and total stations. By the end of this module the student will be able to identify various surveying instruments, define basic surveying terminology, make basic survey calculations and describe basic measurement techniques.
 BE411

Construction Cost Accounting

This module aims to expose students to the nature and use of accounting information as used by management and the many diverse stakeholders associated with the construction industry. The module is intended to prepare students to understand and use basic accounting information for decision support, in the form of analysing historical operations and planning future business activity. The module develops knowledge in the interpretation and application of basic accounting concepts and techniques used to gain intelligence about all aspects of business operations. Emphasis shall be on construction of the basic financial accounting statements - the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement - as well as their interpretation.
BE412  Construction Contract Administration and Procurement  This module examines the principles, procedures and practical application of construction quantities measurement.
