The laws of reflection and refraction are visited from many angles including application in mirrors, lenses, microscopes, telescopes, projectors and spectroscopy.
SEAP124 Waves and Optics 2 This module covers fundamentals of wave motion. Emphasis is on physical concepts and mathematical methods that are applicable to many areas of physics. It gives a systematic study of waves: wave motion, wave equation, propagation of elastic waves in a solid and in a spring; harmonic waves and their properties, superposition principle for waves, interferences of waves, standing waves in a string and column of air; the classical and relativistic Doppler Effects.
SEAP211 Basic Electronics This module introduces students to the fundamentals of electronics. Focus topics are mainly DC circuits, AC circuits, applications of semi-conductor theory (PN junctions, diodes, transistors, signal generators, Schmitt triggers, amplifiers (transistor and operational), umber systems, De Morganis Theorem, combinational logic, logic gates and truth tables
SEAP212 Electricity and Magnetism The goal of this module is to get students acquainted with the basics of electricity and magnetism and its applications.
SEAP221 Electric Circuit Analysis The module introduces students to the analysis of DC circuits (including both steady state and transient behavior) for resistors, capacitors and inductors. Techniques for the analysis of DC resistive circuits will be introduced including serial and parallel networks, mesh and node analysis and the principle of superposition. Equations for the response of a switched voltage across a capacitor and inductor will be developed considering an R-C and R-L circuits

The topics covered in include; Atomic physics and quantum effects, Atomic structure, Ionisation potential and splitting of energy levels ; Nuclear Physics
SEAP223  Electronics and Instrumentation  This module provides an introduction to analogue and digital electronics and software for application in measurement and control systems. Its core contents include: the ideal op-amp and applications, combinational and basic sequential logic, sensors and actuators, block diagrams and equivalent circuits, non-idealities, frequency and transient response, noise and linearity, signal sampling.
 SEAP224  Solid State Physics 1

The course is specifically designed for undergraduate physics students with the primary goal of imparting a comprehensive understanding of basics of Solid State Physics. The aim is to equip students with the essential knowledge and analytical tools essential for describing the intricate phenomena within solid state physics. The course strives to demonstrate the pervasive influence of solid-state physics in our daily surroundings, emphasizing its relevance to our interactions with solids in various contexts.

SEAP213  Physics Laboratory Practice 2  Laboratory experiments designed to complement the taught Physics modules. Selected experiments from wave motion, optics, atomic structure, heat, electronics and electrical circuits and nuclear physics will be performed and written up by the students
SEAP226 Innovation and Entrepreneurship The Innovation and Entrepreneurship module focusses on the interconnection between entrepreneurial thinking and innovation when applying physics knowledge and skills. The student should produce a marketable product designed and built from physics principles
SEAP227 Quantum Mechanics 1 An introduction to the quantum theory, as formulated in the 1920’s and 1930’s by Born, Bohr, Schrödinger, Heisenberg, and others.. Topics covered include Recap of wave motion, Quantum superposition and probability, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and applications, Indeterminacy, complementarity principle, Bohr’s correspondence principle, Particles and atomic systems, Angular momentum, Bound systems.
SEAP312 Medical Physics The module gives an overview of the physics, methods and equipment employed in modern medical physics. The basic interaction processes of particles with matter are outlined, including the interaction of ionising and non-ionising radiation with biological systems. Methods to measure and monitor radiation are discussed. Methods and signal processing employed for MR imaging, PET imaging, SPECT imaging, and ultrasound are presented.
