MASTER OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION EDUCATION SPECIALISING IN BIOLOGY (MSSTIEB)

Module CodeModule NameDescription
MEB502 Animal Biotechnology This module helps students appreciate how Animal Biotechnology make products and provide services to the society and understand that Biotechnology can improve an animal’s impact on the environment and biotechnology enhances the ability to detect, treat and prevent diseases. Students will also understand the political-economic framework, legislation and bioethical problems linked to the application of biotechnologies, animal experimentation and animal production. Animal Biotechnology involves developing techniques, technology, and products that improve production efficiency of livestock, as well as improve the health of animals and humans. Animal Biotechnology utilizes the techniques in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, breeding, and bioinformatics to enhance the quantity and quality of animal products and resistance to diseases. Other applications of animal biotechnology include organ transplantation and production of pharmaceuticals.
MEB503 Medical Biotechnology The module provides students with a deep understanding of cutting-edge techniques used to analyze complex biological samples on molecular level as well as skills to operate and apply such techniques. The student will be provided with in-depth knowledge about scientific methodologies used for comprehensive analyses of biological systems, and their applications for advanced health care or medical surveillance. Students will have the knowledge and tools for moving society in a more sustainable direction. The Medical Biotechnology field creates and maintains sustainable solutions to societal challenges regarding human health.
MEB504 Conservation Ecology The module provides students with a deep understanding of the preservation and management of biodiversity and natural resources. Conservation Ecology is emerging rapidly as a result of the accelerating deterioration of natural systems and the 25worldwide epidemic of species extinctions. The module focuses on ways to conserve species, habitats, landscapes, and ecosystems as quickly, as efficiently, and as economically as possible. The theoretical base of conservation ecology is synthetic, based not only on principles of ecology but on those of genetics, systematics, population biology, and other disciplines.
MEB505 Developmental and Reproductive Biology The module provides students with knowledge and skills involved in embryonic and foetal development and health; prenatal diagnosis and management of pregnancy; in vitro fertilization; use of genomic technologies to understand gene function and identify disease causing gene mutations. It also focuses on the role of stem cells in development and potential stem cell and gene therapy strategies to tackle congenital defects. The module will focus on tackling real life problems related to Developmental and Reproduction health and emphasizes on developing problem-solving skills in students.
MEB501 Botanical Biotechnology The module requires students to employ a set of methods and tools to adapt plants and plant-based products, protecting plants from viruses and pests, improving yield and quality, harnessing plant metabolic diversity for health, and safeguarding the environment and food supply. Gene editing and metabolomics are some of these technologies and are becoming widely used in agribusiness research and development. The module will also focus on addressing current topics such as the engineering of plants, development of stress-tolerant crop varieties and techniques for gene expression and gene silencing through reading discussion and critical analysis of recent research papers. This module addresses areas of current research related to Botanical biotechnology. It also focuses on plant responses to abiotic stresses and the regulation of specific organ development. Some of the topics covered are: how to engineer plants to produce novel cell wall materials, how to produce stress tolerant plants or modify the architecture of plants using existing knowledge and different biotechnological approaches. It is based largely on self-directed learning with tutorial support.
MEB506 Culture and Language in Science Education This module makes students aware of the effects of the culture of science, culture of school science, culture of science classrooms, and cultures of individual actors in the science educative process so that they take appropriate mitigating actions in order for learners to enjoy the learning of science. The module also examines the role of the medium of instruction in the teaching and learning of science
MEB570 Dissertation The module provides students with range of tools, approaches, strategies, data collection methods and concepts that are necessary in educational research It provides them with the knowledge and abilities to undertake their own research. The module also focuses on a wide range of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and data analysis and  prepares students to carrying out meaningful  educational research. The module prepares students on issues related to language, referencing, writing style, lay-out when writing a research report and also how to write a comprehensive research proposal. Students will be exposed  to various computer mediated tools such as tools and technologies for data collection and analysis.
