Name:Dr Nyasha Mabika

Position: Lecturer

Qualifications:

  • BSc Agriculture Management
  • BSc Honours Bioscience
  • MSc Tropical Hyrobiology and Fisheries
  • PhD Zoology

Research Interests:

My research interests are in two parts;  the first part is on the application of histological alterations on fish to assess water quality, while the second part is on  assessing the histology of guniea pig induced wounds treated with medicinal herbs.

  1. Water pollution has been a serious environmental problem all over the world. In Zimbabwe, most water bodies have received quite large amounts of pollutants, forcing the locals to look for alternative sources. I am assessing the histological alterations, particularly in fish so as to give valuable information about the xenobitics effects, as they occur earlier and provide a better evaluation of the effects of aquatic pollution than any single biochemical parameter.
  2. Wound treatment in Zimbabwe is plagued by several significant challenges that impact the quality and effectiveness of care. Zimbabwe's economic challenges, including high poverty rates and limited financial resources, make it difficult for individuals to afford wound care supplies. In recent years, plant extract-derived products have been demonstrated to improve wound healing, either by reducing the influx in situ of inflammatory cells, accelerating re-epithelization, I am currently evaluating the histological appearance of guniea pig induced wounds treated with different locally available medicinal herbs.

Name:Dr Masiyiwa N. Sakupwanya

Qualifications:

  • PhD Plant Pathology- University of Pretoria. South Africa.
  • MSc Molecular & Cell Biology- University of the Witwatersrand. South Africa.
  • BSc Hons. Agriculture & Food Science. Sutton Bonington Campus, University of Nottingham. England.

Research Interests:

Varied Research Interests including: Metabolomics: metabolomics is a now established research approach to the understanding of abiotic and biotic stress tolerance in plant species based on advanced high performance liquid chromatography, machine learning and multivariant statistical techniques. The use of Plant metabolomics applications can help in designing novel strategies for crop improvement for instance for reducing the time required in plant breeding to identify elite lines.

Biological Control using Entomopathogens: mycology research to source natural enemies targeting insect pests. To circumvent the phenomenon of resistance build-up to synthetic pesticides used in agricultural systems, such organisms have a proven track record in managing insect pests thus providing environmentally sound alternatives. Through further research and commercialization, products containing these organisms are a viable option for crop protection in Southern Africa.

Bio Fertilisers: Vermicompost and the various soil borne microorganisms for soil rehabilitation. Zimbabwean arable soils with sandy profiles are characterized as being of gravely poor-quality owing to decimation of organic matter content. Research to rehabilitate such soils using organic approaches is of great interest as healthy soils are the foundation to increased yields.

Name: Dr Josephine Jere

Position: Senior Lecturer

Qualifications:

  • BSc in Agriculture (Crop Sciences)- University of Zimbabwe
  • MSc in Crop Protection -University of Zimbabwe
  • PhD in Plant Pathology - University of Pretoria

Research Interests:

Dr Jere specialises in plant pathology and her research interest are related to this discipline. She mainly focuses on plant disease diagnostics and control, where she promotes the use of non-chemical and environmentally friendly disease management strategies in crop production. This is achieved through screening of plant based extracts and soil microbes which can inhibit major pathogens of plants. She studies soil microbial communities associated with plant rhizosphere, which gives information on how plant species recruit mostly beneficial microbes to help fight stress caused by pathogens, water stress and nutrient deficiency. Dr Jere is also involved in mushroom production research where studies on improving mushroom production systems are undertaken.

 Name: Dr. Takudzwa Comfort Madzivanzira

Qualifications:

  • PhD Fisheries Science (Rhodes University)
  • MSc Tropical Resource Ecology (UZ)
  • BSc Animal Science (UZ)

Research Interests:

My research interests are in the field of freshwater ecology mainly focusing on aquatic alien species that are threatening freshwater systems in sub-Saharan Africa. This is particularly, a daunting area as aquatic alien species, while negatively impacting native species and ecosystems, also have a food value for regional communities. I aim to increase an understanding of the nature and magnitude of their ecological and socioeconomic impacts. Projects include assessments of the distribution and impacts of aquatic alien species and developing mitigating strategies of countering their deleterious impacts. My work combines both blue-sky elements on the broad-scale nature of biotic invasions, as well as highly practical and tangible benefits, such as developing optimised catch methods and mitigation strategies for livelihoods in Southern African riparian communities.

 Name: Ms. Vimbai Audrey Chandiwana

Qualifications:

  • MSc in Geography and Environmental Science
  • BSc Honours in Biological Sciences

Research Interests:

My academic background lies at the intersection of geography, environmental science, and biology. My undergraduate focus in biological sciences equipped me with a strong foundation in ecology, particularly terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity. Building on this base, my Master's in Geography and Environmental Sciences deepened my understanding of environmental systems and the challenges they face. My research interests are particularly drawn to the complex interplay between climate change and natural resources. Here, I see wetlands as a crucial area of focus, given their ecological importance and vulnerability to climate shifts. Furthermore, I am passionate about exploring how governance frameworks can be designed to effectively manage natural resources for sustainability, ensuring the continued health of biodiversity and terrestrial ecosystems in a changing world.

Qualifications:

  • MSc Biostatistics
  • BSc Biology and Statistics

Research Interests:

My research interests lie around statistical modelling, with specific focus on the intersection of diseases and climate change. I am deeply intrigued by the complex interplay between these two dynamic systems and the potential implications for public health. In disease modelling, I am to develop statistical techniques that can accurately capture and predict the spread, transmission and impact of various diseases. By integrating climate data into these models, I seek to uncover the connections between climate patterns and disease dynamics. This will enhance our understanding of the underlying mechanisms and informing effective intervention strategies.

Qualifications:

  • BSc Honours Biological Sciences
  • MSc Biotechnology

Research Interests:

My current and future research interests are in pharmacogenomics and pharmacomicrobiomics of communicable and non- communicable diseases. This has stemmed from my desire to understand why some people respond well to certain drugs, others respond but with adverse reactions whilst some do not respond at all. Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genetic makeup of individuals influences their response to drugs, either efficacy or toxicity and genetic predisposition of individuals to certain diseases with goal to translate knowledge from laboratory bench side to bed side in clinics. Over the past several decades, pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics have been at the forefront of research examining the impact of individual genetic make- up on drug response variability. It has now been estimated that genetic factors can explain 20%–95% of the variability in response to individual drugs. Thus, genetic factors alone are insufficient to explain the observed variability and other factors must be involved. Pharmacomicrobiomics on the other hand, is an emerging field that now investigates the interplay of microbiome variation, drugs response and disposition (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion). Understanding the role of the microbiome in drug response may enable the development of microbiome targeting approaches that enhance drug efficacy.
