Guest Lecture on Research and Innovation, Intellectual Property Registration, Patenting in the Education 5.0 Zimbabwean Discourse
The Education 5.0 philosophy has thrust research and innovation at the centre of higher education teaching and learning processes. The addition of innovation and industrialisation entails that the mandate of higher and tertiary education cannot end with graduating students with certificates and degrees. The students, graduates and university staff have to participate in optimising the knowledge coming out of research into usable products and services through innovation which leads to industrialisation. To enable this research–innovation–industrialisation ecosystem, the University has created new departments and restructured old ones. The Research and Innovation Directorate coordinates all the research, innovation and industrialisation initiatives. These include upscaling research results through IP registration and Protection; prototyping and product/service development whether in the faculties/institutes or the Innovation Hub; commercialising the IPs; development of UZ-linked industries. This lecture touches on all these processes and the expectations placed on both undergraduate and postgraduate students within the Education 5.0 framework.
