MASTER OF SCIENCE INDUSTRIAL AND ORGANISATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY (MIOP)
| Module Code | Module Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| MIOP501 | Industrial and Organisational Psychology | Industrial and Organisational Psychology is the study of human behaviour in organisations; the behaviours of interest contribute to either the effectiveness of organisational functioning, the satisfaction and well-being of those who populate the organisations or both. The application of human behaviour to the workplace has been developed from scientific psychological theories. |
| MIOP502 | Personnel Psychology Theory | This module seeks to introduce students to the field of Personnel Psychology Selected topics within Personnel Psychology will be discussed as they apply to organizations. Personnel Psychology is the older field within Industrial-Organisational Psychology. It is more concerned with the appropriate use of human resources for organizational efficiency. The module helps the student understand job analysis, recruitment and selection, performance management, training in organisations, their applications to organization. |
| MIOP503 | Advanced Research Methods in Applied Settings | The module seeks to help students acquire an of conceptual understanding of the rationale and technique of different qualitative and quantitative approaches in research methodology; and of the rationale and technique of advanced statistical inference approaches, using linear models and other techniques. The module also helps students understand, generate, and critically evaluate results of advanced statistical analyses and outputs of statistical software, as they would be reported in applied and basic psychological literature, and be able to communicate observations to specialist and non-specialist audiences. |
| MIOP504 | Advanced Psychometrics |
The main purpose of this module is to consolidate on the introductory psychometrics course done at undergraduate level. We will assume a certain basic understanding of psychometric principles. Practitioners must be skilled in test development, administration and interpretation in a bid to protect our clients from misuse or misinterpretation of psychological assessments. The focus of the module is on the technical merits of psychological instruments in terms of validity, reliability, difficulty level and norms and interpretation of such information. |
| MIDSB501 |
Information Digital Skills for Postgraduates (University Wide) |
The module introduces students to the use of information technologies and their application in academic research. |
| MSSRM501 |
Advanced Social Science Research Methods (Faculty Wide) |
The module aims to provide advanced skills in research methods for graduate students. It enhances postgraduate students’ knowledge and skills for conducting, analysing and interpreting research in the field of sociology, anthropology and gender studies. The module focuses upon both qualitative and quantitative techniques and the knowledge gained, will be useful for conducting research and as tools for professional practice. The module will also equip learners with the use of digital technologies in data collection, processing, analysis and management. Students to conduct gender sensitive research for the relevant government institutions, UN agencies, NGOs and communities to inform gender policies and programming. |
| MIOP505 | Consulting Psychology | The module covers the applications of psychology in consultation to organizations and systems as well as individuals and teams. The module helps students to understand, assess, and intervene with individuals, groups, and organisations are especially well equipped to meet this need. This module orients students towards a variety of activities and specialisation. Some focus mainly on individual assessment and coaching, others on team consultation or systemwide changes. |
| MIOP506 | Advanced Statistics and Computing for Industrial and Organisational Psychology | The module is designed to equip students with the quantitative skills necessary for evidence-based decision-making in the workplace. It typically focuses on multivariate analysis, psychometrics, and the use of statistical software (e.g., R, SPSS, SAS) to solve complex human capital problems. This module involves an examination of univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses commonly used for research in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. It prepares with the skills required to plan, conduct (using SPSS), report, and interpret advanced quantitative statistical analyses. Specific analyses include: correlation, regression, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and covariance (ANCOVA), multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and covariance (MANCOVA), discriminant analysis, factor analysis, linear modeling, and structural equation modeling. |
| MIOP507 | Organisational Development and Change Management | It seeks to introduce Masters Students to understand Organisation Development (OD), a process that applies a broad range of behavioural science knowledge and practices to mainly help organisations build their capacity to change. The module helps the students get an understanding of the differences between OD and Change Management and how they interlink. It also helps the students get an understanding of the nature and process of OD and its strong theoretical foundations. |
| MIOP508 | Industrial and Organisational Psychology Practice | This applied module introduces students to the theories and practices of Industrial and Organisational Psychology (Occupational Psychology) as applied to individuals at work and to organisations, that are relevant to the practice in both private and public sectors. Students will develop theoretical understanding as well as knowledge of the practical tools and solutions that are applied in the IO practice. The contextual learning helps students understand the consulting cycle and stakeholder engagements unique to the IO practice, which will provide students with a primer to what they may expect in further education and a career in the IO specialisation. The module has a strong emphasis on applied skills. Each seminar will be structured such that students are exposed less to the theories of I/O Psychology and more to how they are practiced within organisations. This will include exposure to best guidelines as set by standard-setting bodies, commercial products and solutions commonly used in industry, and case studies to discuss the ethics of psychological societies of different nations. |
| MIOP570 | Dissertation | The dissertation equips students with the competencies required to plan, execute and write an acceptable academic research project in Industrial and Organisational Psychology. Students will be able to gather, analyse, evaluate and apply knowledge and reason and debate in written format a specific topic, recognizing existing research on the topic and integrate appropriate research methodologies into a project. |
