MFPV508 Police and Investigative Psychology: Theory and Practice The module provides a powerful framework for understanding police and criminal behaviour. It further seeks to integrate aspects of psychology into the investigation of crime. The module focuses on the topics such as the introduction and overview of key concepts in police and investigative psychology, duties of police psychologists, police stress, and psychological approaches to understanding criminal behaviour and delinquency, profiling, interviewing suspected offenders, methods of investigation, psychological characteristics of offenders and investigative interviews.

Advanced Social Science Research Methods (Faculty Wide)

The module aims to provide advanced skills in research methods for graduate students. It enhances postgraduate students’ knowledge and skills for conducting, analysing and interpreting research in the field of sociology, anthropology and gender studies. The module focuses upon both qualitative and quantitative techniques and the knowledge gained, will be useful for conducting research and as tools for professional practice. The module will also equip learners with the use of digital technologies in data collection, processing, analysis and management. Students to conduct gender sensitive research for the relevant government institutions, UN agencies, NGOs and communities to inform gender policies and programming.
MFPV510 Ethics and Professional Practice In Forensic Psychology and Victimology The module helps students to understand the core ethical principles and their application to the practice of Forensic Psychology and Victimology. It also helps students to analyse ethical dilemmas that are specific to forensic contexts, including work with offenders, victims and the legal system, evaluate the link between ethics, law, and cultural considerations in the practice of forensic psychology. The module also helps students to develop skills in ethical decision making and professional accountability.
MFPV502 Advanced Research Methods in Forensic Psychology and Victimology The module seeks to help students acquire a conceptual understanding of the rationale and technique of different qualitative and quantitative approaches in research methodology; and of the rationale and technique of advanced statistical inference approaches, using linear models and other techniques. The module also helps students understand, generate, and critically evaluate results of advanced statistical analyses and outputs of statistical software, as they would be reported in applied and basic psychological literature, and be able to communicate observations to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
MFPV503 Psychology Law and Justice This module examines the social psychological processes involved in defining an act as criminal and deserving of prosecution and conviction. The course includes evaluations of: why we punish offenders; how they are caught, identified and prosecuted; the role of public opinion in justice and the court process. We also evaluate legal decisions by jurors and judges; the treatment of offenders with special needs and the effects of imprisonment for both prisoners and the prison system.
MFPV506 Vulnerability and Victims in Forensic Contexts   This module focuses on vulnerability and victimology as key phenomena in forensic settings. It explores the various theoretical perspectives of vulnerability and victimhood. This module aims to enable students to: develop a critical appreciation of research on vulnerability and victimisation (its nature, extent, patterns, contexts and consequences), and of the discipline of victimology within which much of this research is located; explore debates about a number of issues to which the boundaries of victimisation or the impacts of victimisation are central, and the implications of different positions; introduce students to the international and global dimensions of victimology and victimisation; and give detailed consideration of specific case studies to interrogate the role of state organisations, corporations and NGOs in both creating victimisation and in dealing with its aftermath.

The module is designed to bridge theoretical knowledge with professional, real-world application in forensic psychology settings. It typically covers the role of a forensic psychologist as a consultant, trainer, and problem-solver for organizations such as prisons, probation services, and police forces.

Formulation and Management

 The module covers identifying hazards (suicide, self-harm, violence, neglect), assessing severity/immediacy, using frameworks (like the 5Ps: Predisposing, Precipitating, Perpetuating, Protective factors), developing collaborative management plans with patients, and implementing strategies for safety, emphasizing a systematic, ongoing, and integrated approach across various clinical settings. 
MFPV505 Correctional Psychology: Theory and Practice This module aims to equip you with an understanding of the application of psychology in a correctional setting. You will be instructed on the causes and motivations behind offending behaviour. This would help you to identify factors associated with offending behaviour, in order that these factors can be elicited in assessment and addressed in intervention. Emphasis will be placed on how specific offender populations are assessed, and how intervention principles and strategies are adapted to address specific concerns by these groups. This course aims to encourage you to adopt a scientist-practitioner approach in offender rehabilitation, by considering evidence-based research to influence applied practice.
MFPV580 Applied Placement and Practice in Forensic Psychology and Victimology The module aims to develop students’ ability to plan, prepare, initiate and reflect upon effective applied forensic psychology practice with clients. The module addresses topics such as legal requirements, health and safety, reflective practice, safeguarding, working in effective teams and requisite skills for applied forensic psychology practice. The module involves placement in appropriate and practical settings through which students can observe and assist with applied practice under supervision.
MFPV570 Dissertation The dissertation equips students with the competencies required to plan, execute and write an acceptable academic research project in Forensic Psychology and Victimology. Students will be able to gather, analyse, evaluate and apply knowledge and reason and debate in written format a specific topic, recognizing existing research on the topic and integrate appropriate research methodologies into a project.
