MASTER OF SCIENCE IN URBAN TRANSPORT SYSTEMS DESIGN AND MOBILITY (MUTSDM)
| Module Code | Module Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
| MUTSDM501 | Transport Planning and Engineering Methods | The module aims at developing and enhancing students’ research skills in professional transport planning and engineering practice. A critical investigation of origins, rationale, debates and current applications and shortcomings of selected professional practice in transport planning and engineering is undertaken during the research process. The module therefore allows students to demonstrate competency a selected element of professional data collection, analysis, modelling and estimation, impact assessment, operations and control, regulation or design practice in the field under study. |
| MUTSDM502 | Designing Integrated Transport Systems | The module equips students with skills to solve the challenges that the transport area is facing in an integrated way of thinking with systems perspective. This module focuses on different modes and forms of transport systems under a broad range of important dimensions and considerations such as land use planning, economics, finance, energy efficiency, traffic management, human behaviour, governance, and affordability. Students will learn how to find mobility solutions that are multi-dimensional in nature bearing in mind that transport systems are very complex |
| MUTSDM504 | Quantitative Methods for Transport | The module is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the processes involved in model development. This module equips students with the fundamentals of data analysis, probability and statistics and their application to transportation systems analysis. Quantitative methods in data analysis and statistical methods relevant to traffic and transport engineering, survey design, modelling and forecasting will be investigated. The student will develop an understanding of probability theory and statistical procedures, along with approaches for integrating data analysis and graphical methods. |
| MIDSB501 |
Information Digital Skills for Postgraduates (University Wide Module) |
The module introduces students to the use of information technologies and their application in academic research. |
| MSSRM501 |
Advanced Social Science Research Methods (Faculty Wide Module) |
The module aims to provide advanced skills in research methods for graduate students. It enhances postgraduate students’ knowledge and skills for conducting, analysing and interpreting research in the field of sociology, anthropology and gender studies. The module focuses upon both qualitative and quantitative techniques and the knowledge gained, will be useful for conducting research and as tools for professional practice. The module will also equip learners with the use of digital technologies in data collection, processing, analysis and management. Students to conduct gender sensitive research for the relevant government institutions, UN agencies, NGOs and communities to inform gender policies and programming. |
| MUTSDM505 | Transport Policy and Regulations | This module introduces students to the process of policy making and who is responsible for transport policy e.g. supranational, central and local government structures and the role of the private sector. The module examines the multiple levels of governance and jurisdictions, including the state, regional, and local levels and even internationally (border crossings, shipping policies). The module also explains the impact of public policy on transportation (and vice versa). It also equips students with knowledge on how the policy making process informs practice. Case studies of transport policy and planning approaches in various International cities will also be presented in the module |
| MUTSDM506 | Sustainable Urban Mobility | This module is designed to equip students with the ability to appreciate and address challenges that are stemming from the rapid and often unplanned and uncoordinated growth of cities which has seriously compromised existing transportation systems and significantly increased the challenge of creating new transportation systems, especially in developing countries. This module focuses on alternative approaches in the area of urban transport planning, targeting a more sustainable mobility system. The module allows an analysis of the important issues of sustainable mobility including transport demand management, improved public and non-motorized transport, environmental protection, road safety and gender in transport. It also provides some means such as economic and financial instruments, institutional improvements, capacity building, regulation of markets and environmental standards in a bid to achieve sustainability in the transport sector. |
| MUTSDM507 | Intelligent Transport Systems | The transport system suffers from many challenges, and these include traffic congestion, road accidents and shortage of parking spaces among others. ITS, endeavours to provide innovative services to managing the different modes of transport, by ensuring the smooth movement of people, freight and information, to reach various destinations. It aims to provide transport solutions through utilisation of 21st century solutions and telecommunication technologies, thereby improving road safety, efficiency, and comfort. The module focuses on the relevance of ITS such as Internet of things (IoT), Virtual reality (VR), machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and GPS application in traffic management. This is achieved through the use of electronic toll collection real-time parking management, automated road speed enforcement and emergency vehicles notifications systems. |
| MUTSDM508 | Mobility Modelling and Simulation | Transport planning and management is central in the development of any settlement. Cognizant of this, there is need for proactive planning of transport systems as well as introduction of effective transport management policies. This module is designed to assist in the achievement of proactive planning as well as informing transport planning policies. The module offers traffic modelling and simulations which facilitates for evaluation of infrastructure or policy changes before implementation on the road. The module helps students to analyse and assess transportation networks, transportation infrastructure and transportation modes. This gives an overall understanding of the effects of the proposed designs, infrastructure change or policy on existing transport systems. The module will involve a rigorous use of traffic modelling, mathematical modelling, transport infrastructure design and simulation software packages. The module will be taught in two phases, theory and practical. Theory will include subjects like mathematical and transport modelling, transport modes, impacts of modes, transport infrastructure and their impacts as well as transport policies. Practical aspects will include learning of software packages as well as field visits for traffic data collection. |
| MUTSDM570 | Dissertation | This module is premised on the spirit of inquiry, the commitment to independent study and the ability to demonstrate effective use of personal, technical and professional skills essential for professional and management practice in a wide range of contexts. |
