Biography

Dr Simbini is the course curator of the Biomedical Informatics degree programmes at undergraduate and post graduate levels. His interests include Bioinformatics looking at genomics of infectious diseases and cancers with a focus on personalised medicine. He is also involved in various Medical Informatics activities including Health Systems Strengthening using electronic medical records in Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

Genomics in infectious diseases and cancers. Electronic medical record systems and Machine Learning for disease predictions and patient prognosis

Professional Experience: Dr Taderera has been a member of the University for more than 10 years. She started off as a Graduate teaching assistant in the School of Pharmacy in 2005 and later moved to the Department of Physiology during her DPhil studies in 2011. Dr Taderera has a passion in research on the therapeutic efficacy of traditional medicinal plants in the treatment of different ailments. She was recently awarded a 2-year post-doctoral grant from the UZCHS-PERFECT programme and she will be working on the management of mental health illnesses using traditional medicinal plants. She has been a recipient of the SACORE grant during her DPhil studies, Ministry of Environment- UNDP scholarship during Masters and has won several other prestigious grants for research, workshop and conference attendance. She has spent time at Tshwane University of Technology, Biomedical Sciences Department during her DPhil studies.

She is a member of the Natural Products Research Network for Eastern and Central Africa (NAPRECA). To date she has 18 publications, some here listed.

Experience.

Carol Mahachi has been a member of the department for 14 years, starting as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, the she was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer. She became a permanent member of the academic staff in 2011 as a Lecturer. She has been involved in the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) Study from 2004 as a research assistant/nutritionist. She is a L’Oreal For Women in Science Fellow (2017) and a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow. As Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow she has benefited from the Research and Innovation Staff Exchange Programme where she was hosted by Dr Christina Karatzaferi at Plymouth Marjon University in Plymouth, United Kingdom. In 2017 she was co-beneficiary with Prof Kathryn Myburgh (Stellenbosch University) of the African Collaboration Grant (2017).

Professor Chifamba among many of his responsibilities is a Professor of Physiology, Deputy Dean Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Chairman of the University of Zimbabwe Research and Innovation Week, Member of the University Council, and currently the Acting Manager of the University of Zimbabwe Innovation Hub. He is an active researcher in cardiovascular diseases, the developmental origin of health, and disease. Currently the PI for Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiological Study in Zimbabwe.
