Dr Musiyiwa teaches courses in literary theory, literature, oral literature, African thought, popular music and children’s literature. He has published many journal articles and chapters in books on Zimbabwean popular music, literature and children’s literature covering topics on gender, communication, mythology, identity, religion, politics and storytelling. His research interests are in popular music, children’s literature, gender, sexuality, oral literature, mythology, discourse analysis, communication and narrative.

In 2011 he was awarded the African Doctoral Academy by Stellenbosch University. In March 2013 he took a Graduate Research Affiliate position in the Department of African Languages at the same university. In 2009 he was awarded the International Youth Library fellowship to do research on children’s literature in Germany. He teaches courses in African literature, literary theory, popular music, children’s literature, oral literature and African culture and thought.
