The study of Anatomy and Physiology of Exercise will assist the Physical Education and Sport practitioners understand the different parts of the body and their functions in sport. The knowledge of the two will help the coaches to impart the appropriate training methods for effective performance. The module will cover the following areas; Structural organisation of the body, Body systems, Body’s life processes, The skeletal system, The muscular system, The nervous system, The sensory system, The endocrine system, The respiratory system, and the reproductive system.

It is of paramount importance for a sport practitioner to be equipped with the knowledge of how to organise major sport events. This module will equip the sports practitioner with knowledge on phases involved in organising major sports events. The module will also cover areas to do with legal issues and resources needed for the organisation of the major events. Equipped with this knowledge a sports practitioner becomes confident in organising and running any major sport event. The module will cover the following areas; How to decide in organising a major sport event, Legal issues involved in organising the sport event The process of organising the sport event, Management of human resources, and Organisation of facilities and sites for the sport event.

There has to high cohesion in team sport which the sport practitioner is required to build. This module is meant to equip sports practitioners with the necessary knowledge to coach individual athletes in their specialised sports. The sports practitioner will choose a sport discipline in which he/she will specialise to coach individual athletes in that particular area. The sports practitioner should be able to design training programmes for individual athletes in that sport discipline. The module will offer the following; Skill acquisition for individual athletes, Fundamental techniques involved in specialised coaching, Drills involved in specialised coaching Conditioning Exercises, Individual training Programme, and Preparing the Athlete for Competition.

This module is designed to assist Physical Education and Sport teachers to acquire knowledge on how to effectively give pedagogical instructions to learners. The module will also give incite to teachers of Physical Education and Sport on how pupils learn. Different instructional methods will be given to cater for learners with different learning needs. This module will also assist the teachers on how to assess learners in Physical Education and Sport in order to improve learners’ performance.

HADT301 Work Integrated learning In this module students will be attached to physical education and sport science related institutions such as Olympic Committee, and Sports Commission among others with the aim of acquiring knowledge and skills relevant to those institutions and how that could relate to the teaching of physical education and sport in the various educational systems.

Successful officiating is very important in this modern day sport. This module will equip sports practitioners with the requisite knowledge on various areas of officiating. Some of the areas the module covers include the objectives of officiating, decision making and conflict management. The module covers any three sports codes of choice and the following areas will be covered; Officiating objectives and conduct, Communication skills, Decision making, Conflict management, Time management, Officiating rules of sports codes of choice, Fitness, Effective referring, Code of Ethics, Official Uniform, and Equipment.

The study of Sport Marketing enables sport practitioners to manage sport as a business. This module gives the fundamentals of sport marketing as a foundation. The module also covers such areas as marketing mix, international and event marketing. The module will also focus on marketing environment and competitor environment. This module focuses on sports as a recreation activity. It also looks at the factors that influence sports and recreation.  A brief history of outdoor activities in the ancient times will be studied as a foundation to this module. The module will cover the following areas; Outdoor recreation activities in prehistoric times, Theories of recreation, Theories of play, Factors influencing participation of outdoor recreation, Management of outdoor recreation activities, Outdoor recreation as an industry, and Planning for outdoor recreation activities.

Specialised Coaching in Swimming

t is important for the sports practitioners to grasp the fundamentals of coaching swimming in order to produce high profile swimmers. From the early age swimmers should be taught the correct skills in different swimming strokes. Swimming is a specialised area where the coach needs to identify the appropriate event in which the athlete can be developed from the early age. Hence the sports practitioner should be equipped with the correct knowledge to impart to his/her athletes. The module will offer the following; Developing General Outline of the Practice, Swimming Technique, Determine the Stroke to be Practised, Long Term Athlete Development, Fundamentals – Childhood, Swim Skills – Late Childhood, Train to Train – Adolescence, Train to Compete – Early Adulthood, and Training to win – Adulthood.

Sport and Exercise Therapy

 

There are many injuries that take place in sport especially in contact games like soccer, rugby netball and hockey. There is need for the sport practitioner to be equipped with the knowledge of types of injuries and their rehabilitation. A well-managed injury coupled with good treatment will reduce the period of non-competitive sport for the injured athlete. The module will offer knowledge that will assist the sport practitioner manage the injured athletes.

Research Project

This module is meant to equip students with knowledge and understanding of arts-based research as a systematic application of artistic processes, focused on appreciation of epistemological processes of artistic knowing and inquiry. The module is a consolidation of general research methodologies but anchored on the visual arts. Students will engage in practical inquiry and application of visual art methodologies in case studies as a mode of learning. This will enable students appreciate the significance of peculiar research knowledge and its relevance in disciplinary study.

This module is intended to introduce and promote students awareness and appreciation of the discipline of ethnomusicology from its inception.   It will examine the historical path of is development and methods of inquiry as a field; explore its relationship with other fields like anthropology, musicological while stimulating cultural consciousness and self-identify. Students will learn some theories, the relation to music education.  Further skills knowledge and concepts of documentation and preservation of world musical traditions will be acquired through field work. Current ethnomusicological dismodule issues, research and world music practices will be evaluated.

Practical study in Voice or Instrument of minor specialization

This module is aims to promote students’ awareness and appreciation of advanced performance techniques on selected instruments of Specialisation of either African or Western. The student at the end must be a versatile and competent musician, artist and educator. Performance techniques and theories from a multicultural perspective will be studied alongside pedagogical principles in higher education.

History of Music

This module is intended to promote student appreciation of the study of the history of music. It closely follows the developments in music as an element of culture. Students will learn the stylistic characteristics of the different periods or epochs and the influences behind them. The study will examine the lives and works of major and minor composers as they relate to the cultural outlook of their given time. Western art music has volumes of extant materials through which students can follow the changes that have occurred over historical time.  The resources comprise writings on the object of the study of history of music and discography covering the period from the Middle Ages through to the twenty first century.

Theory and analysis of Music

Students are exposed to/reminded of to the basics of theory of music such as basic note value, the grand stave, triads and time signature, to enable them to transcribe simple music.  The students’ basic knowledge of the theory of music is enhanced to intermediate level for them to be able to tackle more difficult choral and other instrument pieces.

Music Composition and Technology

The module is aimed at developing students’ knowledge and appreciation of music technology software and hardware.  Focus is on basic acoustics, digital audio, MIDI, and MIDI sequencing and notation software. Lab activities will place an emphasis on the operation and components of the typical MIDI and digital audio lab. Music Technology will introduce students to the uses, concepts, techniques, and terminology of computing through applications and experience with current music hardware and software. This module is also designed as an introduction to music fundamentals, notation, and theory. Students will also be learning basic business practices used in the music industry in relation to recording and distribution of music products.

Choral Practice

The choral practice module prepares students for studies and performance of works from a broad spectrum of choral literature. Instruction emphasizes healthy choral/vocal techniques improved note and score reading and expanded knowledge of musical notation, terminology, and styles. Students will learn the fundamentals of vocal technique, gain basic music literacy, and become confident performers on stage through conducting and singing quality choral repertoire at a high level not only in the choir classroom but also other community events. Particular attention will be paid to ensemble   participation in the contexts of rehearsal and performance

Foundations of Music and  Teaching-Learning Methods in Music Education

This module is intended for qualified teachers to further develop their musical arts education as a critical component of and medium of comprehensive education. The students are exposed to the foundations of music education in relation to the teaching and learning methods. The module provides a platform for an analysis, and synthesis of some selected theories of the discipline. An appreciation of the role and value of working strategies in musical learning will be developed through theory and practice. Students will engage in activities that will position music education as part of a comprehensive education.

MTE221 Stage presentation and Management This module provides students with theoretical and practical components of stage presentation and management. Students will develop skills and techniques that will enhance quality musical performance for solo and variety of ensembles.

Measurement, evaluation and assessment in Music

This module begins with foundational issues of measurement, evaluation, and guidance as related to current accountability policy trends, educational frame works, and basic issues of curricular design. This will be followed by a presentation of fundamental approaches to interpreting quantitative and qualitative data typical of educational measurements and traditional conceptions of reliability and validity in music education. The module will deal with approaches for assessing students’ musical learning. Lastly, approaches for grading, common standardized measures, and program evaluation will be discussed.
HADT301 Work Integrated learning  In this module students will be attached to music related institutions such as the College of Music, Chipawo, Kwanongoma. Pakare Paye Arts Centre, Highbrands Music Marketing and the Midlands Academy of Music among others with the aim of acquiring knowledge and skills relevant to those institutions and how that could relate to the teaching of music in the various educational systems.

This module is intended to further explore the discipline of ethnomusicology from its inception.  Students will examine the theory and methodology of the field; examine the relationship with other fields like anthropology, music history, musicological and non-musical forces that contributed to the evolution of the study. Issues that relate to the current ethnomusicological dismodule, research and world music practices will be evaluated through field recordings, literature, listening and performance practice of select genres.

This module is intended for the development of artistic competence in a chosen instrument. Students should be able to demonstrate practical knowledge and musicianship in the instrument or voice.

Aesthetics of Music Cultures

Fundamentals of music is a module that undertakes a critical study of world music cultures focusing on the elements, performance techniques, sonic preferences, instrument production and overall modes of transmission. The anthropological, ethnomusicological and musicological perspectives are applied to develop a wider sense of appreciation of music for the individual, community and global   wellbeing of mankind. Attention is given to the utilitarian functions, purpose, knowledge and skills of musical practices as human social behaviour with potential for contributing to socioeconomic growth and world peace. The academic study of music as a culture specific and trans-cultural element through listening, performance and other active technology and enhanced methods will be undertaken. The module is intended to develop a wider appreciation of different musical traditions, styles and performance practices throughout historical time.

History of South African and Zimbabwean Jazz

The module helps students study how S. African and Zimbabwean jazz started and developed. For South African jazz covers the beginnings from the Cape where people from different parts of the world came together coming in with different instruments as well as their music. The movement to Johannesburg and continuous coming together of people from the rural areas of South Africa and other parts of the world increasingly brought in different types of music. Students are expected to analyse the different types of music and instruments and how they formed the South African jazz. Students listen to some of the music from outstanding jazz performers. The effects of the Negroe spirituals as in the S. African jazz are noted in this module. Students should find out the similarities between the history of the South African and Zimbabwean jazz. Outstanding contributors to Zimbabwean jazz will be highlighted. Students will have an experience in listening to and analysing the music.

Music and Sustainable development

Students are encouraged through this module, to come up with environmental innovations, such as fight against climate change for the formation of a more sustainable future. They can consider aspects such as health issues, corruption, pollution and food options. The students are therefore expected to organize such festivals on small scale, in order to ensure sustainable development in Zimbabwe. Music is therefore used as a vehicle for change.

MTE411 Music business and enterprise This module introduces students to the music industry in areas such as band and artist management, organization royalties and consultancy in the music industry. Students also utilize the experiences they had during attachment.
MTE412 Digital and social media marketing The module introduces students to digital marketing strategies using basic IT skills- including creation of attractive informative websites. Social media such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Snap chat will also be explored in the presentation and distribution of music products.

Music cultures of Sub-Saharan Africa

 

This module takes a survey of Sub-Saharan traditional music styles in the context of continuity and change as an extension of Zimbabwean music cultures. Topics will cover dances traditions, instruments, children’s music, acoustical processes, and functions and organisation. Students will be equipped with principles of practice, meaning and functions of the music performances and text. The module aims to stimulate and develop students’ cultural consciousness and pride in traditional musical practices as identity symbols and artistic expression reflecting different ethnic sensibilities, performance techniques and methodology.

Ensemble Performance

Ensemble performance encompasses virtually all styles of music, encompassing classic repertory from the jazz canon as well as music from the best contemporary composers and African instruments. The ensemble’s mission is to provide students with the performance skills and pedagogical knowledge needed for successful careers as creative artist-teachers. The module seeks to achieve musical excellence in a professional environment with high expectations. Each player’s attitude and preparation are essential to the success of the group. Therefore, individuals are expected to take ownership for their parts and share in the responsibility for their performance. In order to strengthen the ensemble’s performance level and to provide more opportunities for individual players, part assignments may rotate.

Zimbabwean Traditional Music and Dance Styles

This module takes a survey of Zimbabwean traditional music styles in the context of continuity and change. Topics will cover dance traditions, instruments, children’s music, acoustical processes and organisation. Students will be equipped with principles of practice, meaning and functions of the music and dance. The module aims to stimulate and develop students’ cultural consciousness and pride in traditional musical practices. It will foster recognition of identity symbols and artistic expression reflecting ethnic sensibilities, performance techniques and methodology. Music as culture and in cultural contexts is an element that deserves academic inquiry.  Accordingly the programme is intended to promote research into and archiving culture specific musical traditions as relevant study materials.

MTE422 Indigenous technology in musical arts This module exposes students to the study of different aspects of Zimbabwean instrument- making techniques. They work on the musical sound system from the African point of view. Suitable sonorous materials will be identified for construction of quality musical instruments for rhythm as well as specific pitch.
VPA460 Research Project

The module is designed for students to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired from Research methods. They should find tropical issues to research on and try to solve music education problems. This way they get innovative and solve educational and financial problems
